"Sea god's blessing"
So THIS is how Adrian got his abilities!
Adrian the lizard swam into the shrine room of Aquarius' temple, having been summoned by them. He'd served them for the better part of a year now, and though it was a rough start since he couldn't breathe underwater, he'd grown to have a roughly 10 minute breath hold. The lack of any air around didn't bother him, as usual, and he settled down to kneel on the nearby pedestal as he waited. In seconds, a blue glow appeared in front of him, and Aquarius themselves arrived just after, towering over the lizard like always. Not in an intimidating way, of course - Adrian knew his god never meant him harm.
"Adrian", Aquarius spoke directly into the lizard's mind. "Despite the limitations of your body, and even being the only one of my followers from the land, time and time again you've proven your dedication to me. Those are the reasons I've called you here. Tell me, how goes your breath holding training?"
"Not albl that webll, I've bablrely gotten anbly better in abl month..."
"Indeed, I've been told you're having troubles. Your body simply can't manage much more than what it's now capable of, and that prevents you from being even more... Effective. So, I've decided I'll be helping you."
"With trblaining? No offblense, but I'm noblt sure evblen you cabln get moblre out oblf my lublngs..."
"Not with training, no. Something even better: How would you like to become one of my blessed?"
"W-wait, foblr real!?" Adrian had heard this happened to Aquarius' favorites; they'd get really cool new abilities, as well as markings on their bodies. It was a no brainer to him. "O-of coublrse!"
"Perfect. Stay still, you're going to feel strange." Aquarius moved their tendrils near Adrian, and a familiar blue light shone over him from them. Quickly, parts of the lizard the lights were on started intensely tingling; his eyes - making him close them - the end of his tail, his chest, and patches of his scales. He shuddered in discomfort, but stayed where he was, trusting Aquarius.
After about 10 seconds, the feelings faded, and Adrian opened his eyes again, looking down at himself. Immediately he noticed parts of him he had markings on him when he didn't before, each glowing a bright green! He checked his tail as well, seeing that it now had a fin on the end of it, like a fish would have. "This is already so cool! Woah, and I can talk clearly!" Bubbles still left his mouth as he spoke, but they didn't obscure his voice any more.
"There's some changes that won't be as obvious, as well. Your lungs can now sustain you 6 times longer, and small unintelligent sealife will follow your command."
"Wait, my record before was about 10 minutes... I can hold my breath for an hour!? That's awesome!"
"Couldn't give you gills, I'm afraid, but I'm glad you're not disappointed. Now, go ahead and take today off, explore your new capabilities."
"I will! Thanks so much for all this!" Adrian happily hopped off the pedestal and started swimming out.
"One more thing... Take off those goggles. You no longer have need of them." The lizard did so, and sure enough, he could still see just as well!
"Oh, nice! Thanks again!" When Adrian turned to look at Aquarius, they were already gone, but he knew they'd heard him. Eager to see what he could now do, he resumed swimming outside.
