"Sinking escape"

A lizard captain and his first mate were relaxing below deck together, when the ship suddenly rocked with a loud sound... They'd been attacked, and the ship was quickly sinking! He tried his best to help them get out in time, but before long the water had risen to the point the two needed to hold their breath. With the first mate not knowing how to swim, they held onto the captain as he continued trying to get back outside... Will they get out in time? And how far up will they have to swim to reach the surface again?

i feel like all sailors should know how to swim

I heard a really long time ago that most pirates a few centuries ago didn't know how to swim. Don't know if it's true, but it's why I decided to have the bird not able to swim.

squirtlerocks07 and I did an RP based on this.

S: It's a bit of a cloudy day in the middle of the sea, a relatively big ship floats gently on the surface of the water and inside the ship was a lizard captain, along side their trusty first mate which was a bird, they are currently relaxing below the deck of the ship after a hard days work, the bird turns to the lizard captain with a smile on their face
"Ahhh...it sure is nice to finally relax after such a long day captain..."

L: The captain is lounging in a chair nearby, his usual hat on like always. He smiles back at the bird. "You said it! As tough as all this can be sometimes, it's always worth it in the end."

S: "It sure is Cap, it's pretty great!" the bird is lounging in a chair next to the captain, sighing happily, but what both of these guys don't know is...their work isn't gonna be done yet, and things are gonna get bad fast

L: "I've been thinking... Maybe after this trip is done, we could hang out on land a bit longer than usual? We could all go have some fun together before our next trip."

S: "Hey I love that idea! Yeah that'll be awesome! Your so fun to be around captain, and you always make sure I'm well taken care of! Hehe!"

L: "Gotta be nice to the people that have agreed to go so far from home for me, right? I want to do everything I can to make sure you all have a good time."

S: "Thanks captain...that means so much to me, yeah I mean the thoughts of being far away from home sometimes gets to me, but I always put on a smile for you whenever you need me" pretty soon, they hear what sounds like they are getting attacked somewhere!

L: The captain immediately snaps to attention at the sound of it. "Crap, now of all times... We have to get to the top deck!" He quickly gets up off his chair.

S: "Oh come on not now!!! Ugh!!!" the bird also quickly gets up off his chair too, running up to the top deck with the captain

L: Getting up to the deck, the captain quickly figures out where the ship's being attacked from and starts calling out orders to fight back.

S: but it seems like whoever is attacking them is pretty strong, and the crew members couldn't take it anymore, abandoning ship and plunging into the ocean below, and then a big hit gets on the ship, which is likely gonna start to sink the ship with the captain and bird on it!
"Captain! This doesn't look good!"

L: "Argh, damn it, I think we're going down! Come on, we have to get off here quick!"

S: "No please no!" the bird nervously looks down at the water below, the water immediately starts to rush inside the ship, making the bird jump in fear "Ahhhh!! That's a lot of water!! Captain you know I can't swim!! I don't like this!!" the ship tumbles around as it starts to sink under the water

L: "We're not gonna have a choice here soon enough... Once we're in the water, hold onto me, I'll get us both out of here!"

S: "Oh man... I really hope we don't end up submerged...that'll be the worst!!!" the ship rocks and tilts, causing the duo to tumble back down to the bottom deck area, the water levels slowly rising as the ship properly sinks underwater
"Captain...I'm scared! Like, beyond scared!"

L: "It's gonna be okay... We'll get out of this, and we're gonna give whoever did all this some payback someday!"

S: the bird whimpers as the water levels rise
"I sure hope so... these waters are rising quickly! I don't wanna be submerged!!! I've never even been submerged but I know how scary it is!!" the bird's whole body shakes with fear

L: "Just remember to hold your breath, and don't let go of me. You likely can't hold your breath all that long, especially while you're panicking." The captain tries his best to outpace the water, but makes sure not to leave the bird behind.

S: "I don't wanna submerged period! It won't do me any good!" the bird tries to outpace the water as well, but it keeps rising higher, up to the point where the duo's legs are fully submerged, soon rising up higher then that

L: "We're not gonna outrun the water, we'll HAVE to swim for at least a little while... Once we do, just try to keep your air in and let me get us out, it shouldn't be too long!"

S: "Why me!!!" pretty soon, the water reaches the point where the duo would have to tread water in order to stay afloat, with the bird not even knowing how to do that either, he immediately holds onto the captain's back, screaming in fear a bit as the water levels rise faster

L: "T-try to relax, it's gonna be fine! Take some deep breaths, it'll help you last longer and probably help you calm a little too." The captain starts taking deep breaths while he can.

S: but the bird was way too scared to even think about doing that, continuing to shiver and cry in fear as the water continues to rise and rise, it's about halfway full at this point
"It's not gonna be fine!!!!!"

L: Knowing the bird's fear is going to drastically cut down on how long they can hold their breath, the captain puts more focus on trying to help them calm down. "Look, I'm worried too, but it shouldn't be long. We get the rest of the way out - maybe through a hole in the side - then up to the surface, since I think the ship's underwater now. I doubt we'll be under for more than a couple minutes!"

S: the bird looks up at the captain with teary eyes
"I-i-i....captain I really don't wanna go down there!! I'm not gonna survive!! I can't! I just can't calm down right now!!!"

L: "You're gonna be okay, I promise..." The captain slows down for a moment to give the bird a hug.

S: the bird hugs the captain back which calms him down for only a brief second, the water level is now just about 15 inches away from the room fully flooding, causing the bird to panic further, whimpering loudly

L: As much as he wants to keep helping, the captain needs to keep the two of them moving, resuming swimming. "J-just try to get yourself ready, you're gonna be fine..."

S: "I don't know captain... I'm really really scared!! I don't know what to do!" the bird watches the ceiling get even closer to them

L: "Maybe try closing your eyes once you're under, that might help!" The captain starts taking deep breaths.

S: "M-maybe...I still don't know" the bird still isn't taking any deep breathes because of how scared they are, but they better start soon as they are gonna be fully submerged in less then 5 minutes

L: "At least the water seems like it's slowing down a little... But we still need to hurry, every second we're here means we're getting farther from the surface!"

S: the bird yelps at that
"Yeah I guess... but I can't calm down!!" the bird holds onto the captain tighter

L: Still swimming along, the captain focuses on the bird again. "This sucks a LOT, I get that. I'm really gonna miss this ship... But we're gonna be going with it if we stay here."

S: "I know..." by now the water level is almost at the ceiling, and the bird finally takes some breathes in fear, whimpering even more loudly then before

L: The captain starts petting the bird, hoping that'll help. "That's it, deep breaths... I'm sure we'll be at the surface before you know it, and we can meet up with the rest of the crew."

S: the petting does seem to help the bird a little bit, continuing to take deep breathes
"Y-yeah, they are probably worried about us!" there's only 5 more inches of air left before it's completely submerged, and the bird gets really scared

L: "They're definitely gonna be happy to see that we're alright... Come on, let's go prove to them that we can come back from even something like this!"

S: "Uh huh.... oh man... it's gonna be scary holding my breath! I've never ever done it before!"

L: "Yeah, not being able to breathe is pretty nerve-wracking sometimes... But we shouldn't be under for all that long!"

S: "I sure hope not!!" the last inch of air is now slowly gonna go away, the bird getting really scared as he hopes he'll breathe in air again soon

L: "Alright, one last deep breath!" The captain gasps one more time, very much hoping the bird will do the same...

S: "Ahhhh!!!!" luckily the bird manages to gasp in a deep breath, holding it in desperately as the duo is finally forced underwater, the bird yelping and whimpering even more then before as he clutches tightly to the captain's back

L: After another couple pats to the bird's head, the captain resumes swimming at full speed, continuing to work his way out of the ship.

S: the bird's cheeks puff with air as he closes his eyes in fear, constant bubbles escaping his mouth and nose

L: While he wishes he could keep helping the bird, the captain can't stop now without risking drowning, so he just keeps on swimming through the flooded ship, hoping they'll at least get outside soon.

S: it seems like this whole ship is like one big maze now, it was a relatively big ship, and meanwhile outside it...it keeps sinking deeper

L: In the stress of everything that's been happening, and the tilting the ship has been doing, the captain is having a bit of a hard time finding his way through, slowly getting more afraid over time...

S: the bird is beyond afraid at this point, their face already turning bluer then usual because he's not used to holding his breath like this, but in the midst of the maze, they find a decently sized air pocket just a couple feet above them, the bird looking up at it and gesturing to the captain to go up there

L: The captain nods and quickly swims into the air pocket, having been blushing a little himself before he gasps. "Man, the ship's so unfamiliar now... Are you doing okay?"

S: the bird gasps as well a bit heavily, coughing a bit too
"N-not really! I don't wanna go back down there!!! I'm way too scared!!! I didn't deserve any of this!"

L: "I know, and I'm sorry you have to go through this... I think we're at least getting close to being outside, and we'll just be going straight up from there."

S: little do both of them know, they aren't even close to getting outside, not even halfway through the ship's lower areas yet
"I sure hope your right, but.... I really really don't wanna go back down there, I can't calm down enough to hold my breath longer... I'm just too freaked out!"

L: "We can't just stay here, every second we're here means more swimming we'll have to do to reach the surface... If we wait too long, we might not be able to make it any more!"

S: the bird yelps at that
"I-i mean I understand that, but..." he looks down at the water below, quivering in fear "I hate being down there... I just can't captain, I can't! I'm gonna drown down there!"

L: "No you're not! I don't know how far we'll have to swim to get out of all this, but I'm not just gonna let you drown, no matter what!"

S: the bird whimpers, he clearly is in no shape to submerge
"Thanks captain... but still I can't go down there, and I don't know how I'm gonna convince myself to submerge"

L: "I'm not really sure either..." The captain sighs, and just gives the bird a hug.

S: the bird hugs the captain back, tearing up a tad again
"This is so ridiculous!! I don't like not being able to breathe... it's so scary"

L: "As soon as all this is over, I'm gonna teach you to swim. That ought to help you keep calm if you end up underwater again..."

S: "Well, ok then...thanks I guess, but that's if we get outta here, which the odds aren't looking too good for me!"

L: "As long as we get moving fairly soon, I'm PRETTY sure we'll be fine. It's better than staying here and ending up suffocating once the air gets used up..."

S: "I take suffocation over being underwater any day! But I still wouldn't want either of those things to happen to us! Ugh, but I can't go down there! I just can't!"

L: "It's gonna be one or the other if we stay! At least if we swim out, there'll be a chance we'll be okay!"

S: "I guess so... ughhh!!! Captain I don't know what to do... I'm not gonna be able to relax underwater"

L: "I'm kind of running out of ideas... If you do end up staying here, then I can't stay with you. Can't let the rest of the crew down, as much as I'd miss you..."

S: "What??? N-no you can't leave me!! I'm your first mate! I'll miss you just as much!"

L: "Then you HAVE to get a move on! I feel like it might be starting to get unlikely that we reach the surface at this point!"

S: well the ship is now at the bottom of the ocean at this point
"Ugh!! Captain..." the bird tears up even more, whimpering

L: The captain looks around for a moment as he feels the ship stop. "Think we just hit the bottom... I suppose it's gonna be a while until our odds get worse at this point..." He hugs the bird. "Sorry about that, thought it would help motivate you."

S: "Ugh... aw man..." the bird hugs the lizard back tightly
"I really don't know what to do, I just need to find some way to stay calmer underwater and not panic..."

L: "We could hug as we go, but that's gonna be slowing us down a lot... Do you have any ideas?"

S: "Umm... i-im not sure... Wish a dolphin were here or something, that would probably help me stay calm in this situation since i like them so much, heh...but that's definitely not happening here"

L: "That'd be great, yeah... Maybe we'll happen to see one on the way up, who knows."

S: "I doubt it honestly..." the bird sighs "Maybe I should just suck it up and submerge, as much as I don't want to"

L: "Yeah, we need to get going soon... There might at least be more air pockets along the way."

S: "Yeah I hope so... cause I definitely won't be able to hold my breath that long if I'm super scared"

L: "I might be able to sort of make air pockets for you if you need me to, by exhaling some of my air into something for you to breathe it... Do you think that would help?"

S: "Well, yes that may help... but you still need air yourself and I don't want you to drown..."

L: "I could probably do just one, I can hold my breath longer than you. Might end up buying us enough time to surface without you taking in water."

S: "I guess we'll see then...as much as I don't wanna dive back down, the air in here is getting stale, I can feel it...so I guess we better get going... ugh this is gonna suck!"

L: "Yeah, we're gonna be panting in here pretty soon, and it'll cut down on how long we can stay under too... We have to go."

S: the bird whines
"Oh alright fine! Let's do this then" the bird regrettably starts taking deep breathes of the last remaining air

"This is REALLY gonna suck!! Ugh!!"

L: The captain starts deeply breathing as well. "Hopefully this'll be the last dive we have to do..."

S: "I really hope so too... I don't wanna have to dive again after this..."

L: "Neither do I, I want to be done with swimming for a while after this..."

S: "Me too...I wanna be done with water after this..." the air slowly gets more and more stale, and it's about time the duo submerged already

L: "Okay, we need to get going..." The captain holds his breath and goes under, giving the bird a chance to hold their breath as well.

S: the bird quickly takes a last breath and holds it before the captain goes under, holding onto them tightly again as they shut their eyes and whimper again

L: Still as determined as before, though a bit more nervous, the captain resumes swimming through the now-wrecked ship, looking for any way out.

S: the bird tries to stay calm, but with constant bubbles escaping his beak and their face already red...it's not looking good, but with how fast the captain is swimming, they may find the exit soon enough

L: Getting increasingly concerned about the bird, the captain tries to speed up some, hoping he's going the right way.

S: he thankfully seems to be going the correct way, and eventually they find a hole that leads to the outside! However the bird's face is already turning blue when they reached it, grunting in strain and constant bubbles escaping his nostrils and beak as he can't cover them

L: Knowing the bird won't be able to handle the swim up in this state, the captain quickly looks around for something he can blow bubbles into. He grabs a nearby pot, exhales some of his air into it, and gives it to the bird to breathe.

S: the bird grabs the pot and puts it over their head to breathe in the air provided, gasping heavily, he keeps it up for a while, wanting to delay the enviable for as long as he can

L: While the bird is doing that, the captain swims out of the ship through the hole, starting to swim straight up toward the distant surface as he begins blushing.

S: eventually once the air gets stale, the bird shakes his head and holds his breath before taking the pot off his head

L: With so much less air in him, the captain's need to breathe is getting worse at just about the same rate as the bird's. He tries to ignore it as he continues swimming.

S: noticing the captain is struggling just as much as him, the bird covers the captain's mouth for him while still holding on with one hand

L: The captain smiles a little at that, even though his face is entirely red by now. Still, he keeps going up...

S: the bird hopes they will reach the surface in time, his own face turning blue again from the anxiety he's feeling, but they seem like they are pretty close

L: There's some whines from the captain as he now has to fight to keep holding his breath, his lungs beginning to burn.

S: the bird whines as well, but the surface comes into view! Both their faces are deeply blue, just a few more inches to go...

L: The captain's swimming gets a bit frantic as he sees the surface, approaching his limit from being so low on air for so long.

S: the bird is approaching his limit too, but thankfully both of them manage to finally surface and the bird gasps heavily for air, coughing too

L: The captain gasps as well, panting and struggling to stay on the surface as his face starts going back to normal over time.

S: the bird keeps holding on tight to the captain as his own face slowly goes back to normal
"Hah....hah....we made it!!"

L: "W-way too close, hah... B-but yeah, w-we did it!" The captain's swimming calms, and he looks around for the rest of the crew.

S: "Never again, never submerging again!" the bird looks around too, but nobody could be found...by now the rest of the crew either made it back to shore...or got too tired of swimming and drowned

L: "Let's get to shore... Hopefully we won't be the only ones there..." The captain starts swimming toward the shore.

S: "Yeah..." they managed to get back to shore, but only 1 other crew member survived the attack and is pacing back and forth worringly, a Buizel

L: The captain looks around the otherwise empty area, then at the buizel, getting a concerned look. "You're not the only one, are you?"

S: the buizel turns around and sees the captain and bird
Buizel - "Oh captain! Your safe! And your first mate is ok too! Unfortunately, I am the only one... I think the rest of crew drowned sir..."

Bird - "What?!"

L: "E-everyone else!? D-damn it, we've really lost almost everything..." He sits down in the sand, unsure what to do now.

S: "That's so sad..." the bird sits down next to the captain, hugging them tightly

Buizel - "It seems that way captain... I guess since you had each other you survived the attack...and I'm already naturally good in the water anyways so that's probably how I survived, but when I find whoever did this to us, imma give them a piece of my mind!"

L: "...We're gonna get revenge on them. I don't care how long it takes. Plus, we need a new ship... Why not take theirs?"

S: "But sir, we don't know where they came from or what their ship looked like, we might be screwed..."

Bird - "Buizel is right... we were so caught off guard we don't even know what we're looking for or where to begin"

L: "...Yeah, we're in no state for that right now... Let's just find somewhere to rest for now, we'll figure something out later."

S: "Yeah..." and so the buizel, bird and captain all sit down to rest after a long day, wondering how they are gonna approach all of this, but that's in the back of their minds.... to be continued...
