The Days After, it takes place in the world at about the same time. (Speaking of TDA, it is now available in various (e)book formats at the link above as well!)
People have been starting to turn into dragons, but not everyone. Some are fortunate to get support and care, others... less so. Nicholas and his sister Sophia belong firmly in the latter camp, and their outlook is bleak. But if someone can help them then perhaps they can try and escape and find safety in a dangerous world, all while their bodies continue to change and they undergo new, alien experiences previously impossible for humans to have...
Commissioned by walnut45, who also provided a lot of the direction and advice on helping flesh the story and its characters out. I'd also like to extend thanks to
Marked mature for violence and a small amount of foul language. As with TPBS this is a serious story that touches on some equally serious themes, and I have done my best to approach them as respectfully as I can. It is finally done. I started working on this in May 2023, and finished the first draft in October the same year. It's been in Editing Purgatory since then, really proving that the last 1% really does take 99% of the time, but thanks to the commissioner and my editor helping me over the finish line, my second book is completed and even longer than the first.
This was definitely my most ambitious project to date, which I realized right about the time that I made a literal spreadsheet to keep track of each character's transformation progress at different points in the story so that I wouldn't create any contradictions. That definitely eclipses the Python script I once wrote to spread characters evenly across scenes.
Just like with TPBS I never intended to write a book, it just kind of happened, especially after the first draft when some additional scenes got written in (much like with The Days After). And the longer a story gets the more careful I have to be to avoid contradictions or unnecessary repetitions. I am proud of this story and glad to show it off, and the only reason I am glad it's done is because I'm an objective-oriented person and Forever WIPs make me uneasy.
I had a good balance of creative freedom and commissioner guidance for this one. I was able to write the characters and events as I envisioned them and then got valuable feedback to help refine them. It's been a long road but that extensive editing process was certainly necessary to make this the best it could be, and I hope that any readers agree with it.
So if you liked The Days After or you are just a TF Enjoyer™ then please download a copy - it's free! - and give it a read. Even if not, it still has its own story to carry it heavily supported by character interactions and development.
All characters and the story were created by me; the greater-scope setting is walnut45's. The cover art was done by https://www.ellinsworth.co/ and a high-res version is available on the microsite.
