There are plenty of stories out there - both mundane and otherwise - regarding forests and tree-shrouded areas. Various predatory animals watching you through the dark separations of trees, waiting for you to turn your back so they can strike for a quick meal. Fey who are all too eager to lead you astray, their machinations known only to them. Spirits that dazzle the sight, dancing under the moon's glow as magic permeates the land.
Some stories are steeped in truth, others are fairytales born of the simple sights one glimpses when nature goes silent. But there's always a reason for those stories to originate. They all tell of danger, of reasons to not be alone, and to beware what lies in the darkness.
The most common stories tend to revolve around moonlit curses. Vampires, werewolves, cults... The types that thrive in the moon's glow. But it's all just stories, of course. Stories to be told around a campfire, roasting marshmallows and having a good time.
Just stories, stories seen nowhere but from word of mouth, with no evidence to back them up save the raving lunatics that come back bearing 'grave news' of 'dangerous monsters'. Stories that - as the camera flashes through the night - feel all too real...
The light spears through the night, brighter than the moon, reflecting not just off trees and leaves, but off eyes. Two is expected. Four can be passed off as a trick of the light. Eight becomes worrisome. Sixteen sends cold spearing through that is separate to the night's chill.
Then the flash fades, and suddenly you understand why nobody brings back evidence.
