I smell a setup, shopkeeper sells to them and then slips something expensive in their pockets, then calls city guards and accuses them of theft saying the objects they bought and the one in their pocket were stolen from him, guards arrest them and dirty merchant gets all the stuff back and gets to keep the money they gave him in the first place. Dirty merchant is in for a nasty surprise when he finds out he accused the royal family of theft!
