Shadowrun does not get enough attention. It's such a cool blending of D&D fantasy and Cyberpunk futuristic with often a little bit of noir thrown in. Though, I think it could use more of the fantastical races that D&D has. Just being human, elf, ork, troll, or dwarf, can get a bit boring after a time.
Too bad we can't get a quality Baldur's Gate 3 style game in Shadowrun.

You're right about how to add species. It's a similar thing in the setting of Cyberpunk. There they are referred to as Exotics. Exotics are people who have undergone surgical procedures from simple cosmetic surgery to full-on gene splicing.
I used to play a Cyberpunk TTRPG where one of the characters was a former member of the Animals gang. She had become an Exotic through a high-dollar gene splicing surgery. If you know of the show Batman Beyond, in the Jokerz gang there is a character named Woof who is gene-spliced to be a hyena anthro. It was the same for this girl, but to pay for it she became a merc for hire, which put her on the run as the Animals didn't like one of their own working for others that didn't pay the gang.

So far it is. Pretty much a Metroid-like game... Your have to check out a preview of it if you have steam. Though another one if you are into sandbox-like games, firework mania is tons of fun for the little pyro in anyone. :)
