The 1974 All-AI Auto Show

the_1974_all-ai_car_show.mp4
Rare old lost footage from the seventies, of concept cars so amazing, no one in their right mind would have ever actually built them.

Not very furry, so I'm tossin' it in scraps.

Images made with Bing Designer, BGM by Udio.

Thanks! I had a lot of fun making these, and was wowed at how well it nailed the era-feel and lighting.

Some of these beautys would make KITT blush. Others, might not be seen outside the set of Lost In Space, Buck Rogers, The Gong Show..

These are kinda like Garbage Pail Kars, sorta...

Was also definitely inspired by the book Cars Detroit Never Built. Gave me a love of concept cars. Especially the ones so weird, they knew damn well they'd never make it to production.

Yeah, I can imagine there's one specific reason for that specific model to exist. One family or one trip to Somewhere. Because you can't take the whole family to see the world's 2nd largest ball of Absolutely Nothing Worth The Trip, unless it's in a three level VW Bug.
But no matter how wacky the design, there's someone who'll want a laser-emitting crystal-plated Synthwave Ferrari.

...I have to put that last phrase into Bing now.

You're right, that's awesome.
(Wants to afford to own a car, just so I can stand in front of those rows of white subarus, whip out a tablet to the car salesman and ask "But do you have one like this?")

Do you think that we could also get a 1957 auto show?

I actually have two more videos of 70s cars (I made a gigantic batch of 1300 images, and so many of them were amazing). But that's a really tantalizing idea. The fifties were when cars looked their most cartoonish.

"Wait. Some of those cars have more inside than those chassis can really hold..?"
Oh, didn't the designers WISH???
And the supercar/ concept car era from the late 60s into the mid 70s is my favorite because they're all so swoopy and phallic. And again, this presentation from Our Host works because it pegs the false-positive needle of the Nostalgia-O-Meter. Have we seen these kinds of designs on vehicles IRL? We might have:

These are production Lamborghinis:

Here's that Synthwave Ferrari earlier mentioned:

Yeah, I'm in love with crazy ones like the Fascination, the Modulo, the M6GT, the Aerovette and the Dome Zero. Mmmmm. But then comes the 80s and you get the Bricklin, the DMC 12, the Wolfrace Sonic and the Countache. Mmmmmmm!

Not for the first time I notice that there's a thin line between the most beautiful cars of all time and the ugliest.

And Oh my GOD that last Ferarri is INSANE. It looks like its bottom lip got stung by a bee!

You know your shit.
"Not for the first time I notice that there's a thin line between the most beautiful cars of all time and the ugliest."
And THAT'S ... FASHION!
Luigi Colani was a madman Italian designer. Do an image search and see what I mean. That Ferrari might be a callout to the wackiness of Japan's Bosozoku styling, but I don't know.
And oh! Go and look up Syd Mead's artwork for U.S. Steel in the 1960s.
