My last song, “(Show Me) Your Paws”, wasn’t all that bad; my main issue with that one is that I wanted to emulate a specific genre — much like I did here… — but instead of emulating a genre, I more or less created a pastiche of an artist’s style. I held too closely to their style and, though, I tried deviating from it so it didn’t seem to obvious that I was using them for inspiration (“them” being Alive Deejay and their song “Better Off Alone”, now that I’ve mentioned it, I bet you can hear the similarities…) but in the end, it ended up sounding odd to me and not quite what I was going for.
I blame that on the R&D (research and development) phase I take to my music. Usually, if I am trying to emulate a specific style or genre, I’ll listen to some songs in that specific genre or other remixes of the song I’m remixing, should that be what I am working on, just to get an idea of what I’m working with, potential avenues to venture down, or in the case of remixes, what to avoid so that I don’t end up replicating someone else’s remix. With “(Show Me) Your Paws”, however, the “style” I wanted to go for started out being “80’s techno” but as the R&D progressed, ended up being, “I want it to sound like ‘Better Off Alone’”… which was the problem. For this song, I wanted jumpstyle. I know a few artists who are known for this genre, but I didn’t listen to any of them. I’ve listened to their songs enough to manifest the general vibe that I wanted this song to give off, and with that manifestation of the jumpstyle genre, I managed to create this song.
