Character Description

Beotrix was raised to be a fighter from birth, her family functioning more like a herd than a unit, raised collectively with her "brothers and sisters". She was trained to raid traveling caravans for money, food, clothing, or anything the dwelling could use. Of course, she was all too eager to share in the bloodlust of her brethren, aspiring to one day join the raiders and do the dirty work.

Background/History

A few days before she ventured out with the other goblins for her first raid, while gathering water, she came across a brown bear. Even for a human, a brown bear is a menace to behold, but for a goblin, it stood three - maybe four times larger than her. Beotrix stood frozen as the great beast walked closer and closer, snarling and teeth bared. She thought to herself, "This is my end, this is where my story stops? I've never done anything yet!". And before the bear could grab hold of her and eat her alive, a sharp sound rang out in her small goblin ears - and then a loud wet "THUNK". Beotrix looked at the bear and it kept looking at her, but it had stopped walking. Suddenly the bear collapsed. A slender, long wooden piece of wood protruding from the side of its head.

Beotrix stood motionless and realized she needed to breathe! She fell backwards, tears streaming, kicking at the ground to move farther from the - now dead - goliath at her feet. Within a few moments, she could hear footsteps slowly walking towards her from her side. She quickly drew her knife and pointed it at the footsteps. Her eyes focusing on the figure now coming into view.

A human stood where she pointed the knife, there with his bow half-drawn at his side. Beotrix had never seen a human before - so to her - this pale-skinned, tall creature standing before her was terrifying. She looked at the bow and then his face, gripping onto the knife harder. He stared at the knife, then looked at the bear, then back at her, slowly noticing the tears on her face. He slowly let the arrow go slack in his hands and then did something completely unexpected to her. He put the bow down next to himself, and knelt down, putting up his hands in a show of "peace", to a goblin like Beotrix, though this was a sign of "submission". Taken aback, she lowered her arm slightly. He then said something to her that she could not make out - a language she had never heard before.

The human then reached at his side and brought up a flask, brought it to his mouth, and drank a swig. Beotrix looked on puzzled. He then sat down where he stood and held out the flask to her. Beotrix looked at him and the offering he was handing to her, and slowly stood up but never letting the knife drop from its position.

She slowly shimmied over to him, never breaking her stance. When she was close enough to him, she grabbed the flask. While her knife was still raised and still looking at the man, she took a drink of the flask. The liquid was sweet but had a foul aftertaste that made her cough. Then came a sensation that every hair on her head was moving, rearranging itself, as if her scalp was made of pure static. She shook her head for a moment and looked at the man again. The man smiled with gentle eyes and said "You should be able to understand me now, correct?". Beotrix stared at the man and blinked while her mouth gaped open for a second, her arm faltering for a moment as she knew every word that the man was saying, from a language she had never heard before.

His smile now widening even more, the man started to laugh. Beotrix, realizing she was off guard, stiffened her muscles and yelled back "What did you do to me?!" As the words left her mouth she knew something was different. Those words... How did she know them?

The man put up a hand. "That was an intelligence potion, a fairly common one, it won't make you a genius because it's meant to tame animals. But a feral goblin such as yourself, well that stuff would probably make you into half descent people if it works, for someone like me it doesn't have any affect at all. Little Miss, I'm, afraid to tell you that the only thing I've done is opened your mind to a higher understanding."
