I'll admit, this drawing is a lot more dark and depressing than most of my other work but this has been something I've wanted to draw for a long time as this really hits me on a personal level. That being said, here is the story I came up with for this drawing.
With Mother's Day approaching, several of Nemo's friends at school began discussing what kind of presents they would give to their mothers. Naturally, this was a very difficult time of year for Nemo due to his mother passing away before he even hatched. When he was asked what he was going to give to her, there was a moment awkward silence followed by Nemo hesitantly responding by simply saying that his mother was dead. The mood very quickly changed and his classmates were all in shock and were full of sympathy. When asked how did she die, Nemo couldn't think of an adequate answer. His father Marlin didn't hide the fact that his mother was dead or that he had several unhatched siblings but had never told him about the circumstances that lead up to their deaths. His curiosity got the best of him and he decided that he had to figure out what exactly happened.
Later that night, several hours after Nemo got off school and returned home with his Dad, he finally built up the courage to ask him what happened to his Mom. Marlin was frozen in terror as it was the day he dreadfully knew was coming. While he never kept his wife, Coral's death a secret from their son, he never told him exactly how she died due to the graphic nature of her death. He figured that it would simply be better to wait for him to ask what happened rather than tell him before he's ready yet. After a deep breath and with great hesitation, Marlin finally began to tell the whole story to his son. Marlin explained that before Nemo was hatched, a barracuda invaded their territory. The creature knocked Marlin unconscious while Coral fought hard to protect her eggs but tragically, they we're all eaten alive. Marlin woke up to find that not only was his wife gone but so were all but one of his unhatched children with the sole survivor being Nemo.
Upon reacting to the story, Nemo's mood gradually shifted from silence, to silently crying, to hysterically crying over the span of a few minutes. It was the first time ever where he properly grieved over his mother's death. He then shouted at the top of his gills, "I want my Mom!". With nothing else he could do, Marlin grabbed his son and hugged him tightly. Marlin began to cry himself reminiscing over his wife and simply said to his son, "I'm so sorry, Nemo. I'm so, so, so sorry.". After what felt like an eternity of crying, Marlin looked at Nemo and realized how much he saw so much of Coral in him, not only with his looks but also with his bravery and courageous actions. He finally smiled for the first time in hours and said to Nemo, "You know, if she were alive to today, she would be so proud of you. You've accomplished so much and she would be beaming with joy knowing what you have become. She died protecting you.... so that you could carry on her legacy - and you did - and I love you so much for that.... my beautiful son.". Upon hearing his father's reassurance, Nemo, although still heavily grief stricken, felt a temporary sense of warmth and joy, and smiled at his Dad for a breif moment. The father and son continued hold on to each other well into the night, even after they both fell asleep showing that their bond will never be broken no matter what life throws at them.
Well, there you have it. This was a rather difficult drawing to make for me on an emotional level. Years ago, I lost my own mother to a heart attack when she was just 52 after years of struggling with alcoholism. However, she was not a good parent in many ways and wasn't involved in my life for several years prior to her death so I didn't properly grieve at first. It wasn't until about 10 months after she died when I had a particularly unlucky day and suffered a massive mental breakdown. Fortunately, my Dad was there to console with me and as I was crying hysterically, I simply said to him, "I want my Mom.". It was the first time ever where I actually cried over her death and as you'd probably guess, that incident is what very loosely inspired this drawing. To all of those who still have both of their parents around and are close to them, consider yourselves blessed. Go talk to them and tell them how much you love them and appreciate what they've done for you because you never know when that might be the last time you ever get to speak with them.
