Always loved the aesthetics in Windows Vista through 7. I also like the idea of my silly drawings living in my computer like they run the joint.

I wish I could still run win7.  However, the GPU I bought in summer 2020 doesn't have win7 drivers.  I saw the impending GPU shortage coming, but I didn't expect them to force everyone to use the surveillance and spyware OS via the GPU.  Win10 ships with built-in facial recognition software (which talks to Microsoft) in the default image viewer, a mainstream media propaganda feed built into multiple places, random updates and shut downs without your approval, countless driver issues with things as basic as sound... win10 is unusable in its default state, and it seems like win11 is even worse.  I spend dozens of hours just turning off as much crap as possible with a fresh win10 install, and I always miss something.  Its torturous.  I can't even get sai 1 to work on win10, I had to switch to sai 2, and there are brushes sai 1 can do that sai 2 cannot.

This art is maximum digital comfy, win7 just worked... they weren't treating you like a datafarm and a "subscriber" on your own hardware.

It really is a shame what Windows has become. I daily drive Windows 11 and there's certain technical stuff I like about it, but the UI is slow, laggy and an incohesive mess that often hinders my productivity (organizing files in Explorer is a nightmare now, even with tabs), and the often weird decisions they make when adding or "improving" features through monthly patches has gotten old and confusing, leaving you scratching your head going "Why did they add/change this?" Their development team is tightly leashed by their higher-ups, so they can't fix the stuff that really matters. And their current beta program is inefficient and unprofessional, as it's open to literally anyone and often relies on social media for feedback.

I miss when Windows had actual polish and heart put into its development. Now it's just kinda turned into a data mining side-project for Microsoft while Azure is their current big moneymaker. I've kinda given up hope and attempted to switch to Linux multiple times, but often get overwhelmed with crap I have to fix and always end up going back to Windows. I wish I could just stick to Windows 7 but can't for the same obvious reasons as you. :\

All of the spyware being on by default is a dealbreaker for me, especially after dealing with setting up win10 (took countless hours disabling spyware).  It's not like they hide what they believe in, so I don't want to touch win11 or give microsoft any money ever.

The "shape" of the internet is changing.  It will resemble something more like China's internet if they get their way. I think either way it goes, it's still not going to be as important to have powerful hardware or a Microsoft or Apple OS.  I just hope that it ends up being impossible to censor. :3
