Sometimes I wonder if the thing the others are infected with had enough time to evolve into something more symbiotic in nature.

'S hard to say, the border between symbiote and parasite is just whether or not the host is benefited or harmed for the benefit of the other. That's already somewhat subjective (an organism that destroys your immune system but enables you to rapidly regrow lost limbs could be either depending entirely on whether you're more concerned about disease or sudden loss of limb), but to make matters even more confusing this organism didn't actually evolve to infect sentient life so the way it's affecting them is going to be abnormal for it to begin with.
