So this is a good example of why I really want to do that little side arc that goes into detail on how the infection works. Because it might seem inconsistent that the zombies alternate between a strong sense of self-preservation and berserk mauling of the space pirates. But the pirates were an armed and threatening force while still being possible for them to defeat and the only time a zombie went all "I will skin you alive" on were the one he hit with the fire extinguisher and the vent snake who, let's be fair, was not likely in a sensible state of mind.

It's definitely the fear of death, although I'm also not sure if the suction from his tentacles would be able to hold up his body weigth
