Maybe at some point I should sit down and take the time to cover how resurrection magic works in this world. The short version is that it does exist but it's not readily available enough to really curb the sting of death. Resurrecting someone is expensive and difficult, it requires both a willing subject (which is less common than one might think) intimate knowledge of the subject (or a participant with the same knowledge), and then add to that the need for a viable corpse (and don't get me started on the requirements to return a smashed corpse like that to a viable condition) and basically even when people can afford resurrections it's often not a viable option.
