Forward:
Sonny Merrick: Another disgruntled youth attending Milwest High School in the Trenton District, Sonny is a kid who has a hard time buying into the enduring optimism of the capitalist society. He wavered in between the ideologies of cold hard realism, and more anarchist thoughts, all as time went on. He saw firsthand the poverty stricken streets but a stones throw away from downtowns Brookstone District, and the sort class war that continued to unfold as time went on. Having lost his father in the Jenam war, he acknowledged the sacrifices that had to be made..but was touched in a negative light just the same. And in spite of his seemingly endless prospects of success for the future, he was reticent to blindly accept that there would be a place for him in this brave new world. At the same time, he didn't buy into the “clique and gang” mentality that seemed to have swept through his peers in an ever escalating conflict to control “territories” and the streets. He had shown interest at one time for the beatnik and anarchist movements, but abstained; they were either too depressing, or too radical. He instead assumed the role as a loner, and worked a quiet job as a sort of specialized courier. The courier job strangely allowed for a very broad range of street gossip and practical information. Who held power on the streets, who owed who, the big players involved, who could provide what.. Information that allowed for not only a fresh perspective and street smarts, but also key opportunities. Here, he leans against the railing of an apartment complex's walkway, with the “steppes” and “terraces” behind him supporting a small eatery and the Kathrel Cathedral at its top. Even further back is the massive Monolith building, a cement and bronze building of massive proportions. City folk go about their daily business, as the day continues to unfold..
Commentary: This was actually a picture drawn entirely on the ipad, using a program called Sketchbook Pro. And I must say, I absolutely love the program. For two dollars, I could make pictures that were almost on par to those I could do via the computer, as far as overall quality. I focused mainly on the background to show just a section of New Havens overall style of architecture, and perhaps less on the character himself. Either way, I guess Koishi is really making a fashion statement with his rolled-up-sleeves blue hoodie look, and it's imparted on Sonny here. Although, Sonny's hoodie looks a little too small for him, now that it's all said and done. Ah well.
