Funny you should say that. While the Berthier and the Carcano are different designs, they do both use a "Mannlicher" feed system. Ammo is load onto a clip and the loaded clip is inserted into the rifle with the empty clip ejecting out the bottom once the last round is chambered. (The M1 Garand works in a near identical fashion, just ejecting the clip out the top after the last round is fired instead.)
