Twas the year 1363 Anno Domini. It had been ten years since the black death claimed a third of the worlds inhabitants, though it continued to claim lives sporadically afterwards. Benedicts parents had been claimed in the aftermath of the plague when only an infant 4 short years ago but he was too young to understand. He lived in The Abbey Orphanage with the many orphaned children of the peasant class. The Abbey was strict and had little patience for curious kittens and their games. The Abbess in particular viewed him with suspicion, owing to a prejudice against black cats as being secretly in league with the devil. She would often look for petty reasons to beat the child. It looked like Benedict would never escape his benighted plight, that was until a dark and stormy night in October on a Friday The 13th ... when his life was to be changed forever.
