"Drowned too long"

How long ago had he run out of breath? 10 minutes? 15? His dulled mind couldn't remember that or much of anything else any more. Another hiccup, and he drew yet another aquatic breath, weakly swimming through the cave's endless tunnels. Soon, he was too weak to go on, and while he tried to walk, he quickly fell to his hands and knees. He was only taking slow, shallow breaths by now, half-closed eyes blearily staring at nothing as he fruitlessly tried to recover the strength fading from his now blue body...
