"Drowned, but not out"

With a weak gurgle, the very last of the drowned ampharos' air bubbled from their flooded lungs, and as their eyelids started to slide shut... They allowed their electricity to flow freely through their body. Quickly, they came back to awareness despite the blue on their face, shakily standing up on the seabed they'd sunk to. They could survive off electricity instead of oxygen, but their body was NOT made for this; it was hard to make themselves breathe, but also hard to not breathe, and they felt dizzy and a bit sleepy. Despite all this, the ampharos was enjoying themselves, an occasional hiccup, cough, or loud gasp being audible as they wandered the seabed.

Nearly 10 minutes passed like this, and any trace of oxygen in the ampharos' body was long gone, leaving their skin with a blue tint all over. They grew annoyed with the dizziness and sleepiness, sitting down to rub themselves and realizing they'd gone somewhat numb. Trying to fix the issues they were having, they breathed heavily, momentarily forgetting it wasn't doing anything, and raised the voltage coursing through them, electricity crackling around them. They weren't quite sure either of those were helping.

Sparks could teach them a thing or two about this. She regularly practices with a rubber muzzle over her face so she can't breathe, making herself stay awake on electricity alone. :3 I worked out how this happens at the cell level when I took A&P too, I'm very happy someone else has the same idea!

I've always enjoyed this concept ever since I discovered it, and while I'm not sure, there's a good chance it was through something of yours. Cool to hear that it's not entirely unrealistic!

It's possible! Might it be this? https://inkbunny.net/s/771715

That's Sparks. The way it works is her body pulses electricity through every cell and it repels negative ions inside her mitochondria, pushing them through a one-way "gate" in order to get out once the pulse is gone, to get away from each other, they have to go out another "gate" that makes them charge up ATP, which the cell uses for energy. Normally this is done with oxygen, that's why cells can't survive without oxygen, because the process makes 7x more energy than just using sugar. Her limit while conscious is about 1 hour, but if she's recharged it can be indefinite. There was also a picture of her, my Eevee anthro, and feral Umbreon, all in tanks.

That's the one that came to mind when I thought about what might've been first, so that's probably it!

Certainly a more complicated process than I expected, but I think I've got the gist of it.
