And...this is close to losing me. I understand that there are still people hung up on the belief of a god or goddess...but to those of us with an IQ over 50 this is a dark corner to avoid.

I am not religious in the slightest. That said I think it’s an interesting character trait and I don’t mind it as it is right now. If it becomes the main focus of the whole story then I agree that it would probably lose me too. As the main focus of a single character among other characters who don’t have a stated religion though I have no issues with it.

I have to apologize here to the author as well as those who will take my statement offensive. I've suffered some serious evils at the hands of religion & at this point any reference to it is like a wasp sting. My only grievance is that was this really necessary in a "created world" where the evil and darkness of religion never even needed to happen? Sadly, some artists and creators feel the need to drag the evil of the human world into their created worlds.

I kind of think that this is partially the point - Horemheb is conveying a character who's gone through religious indoctrination and abuse, and is showing the kind of thinking that results from that kind of trauma. It sucks that it exists at all, but since it does, it should be talked about and explored in art. Even a cub porn comic can have a point other than the sexy parts. :3

And don't get me wrong - you aren't the only one who's suffered at the hands of religion, so I understand where you're coming from.

I know...and yet it makes me run away. >.<

I agree with both. If it’s a point of trauma then there is no shame in avoiding the content. But it shouldn’t be discouraged to cover the evils of the world in art.

Edit: To be clear I am not saying religion is evil or taking any sort of stance on religion. In general though I believe that any form of evil should be allowed to be expressed in art and no one should feel bad about wanting to avoid whatever.

Completely and entirely understandable. I didn’t know that context. I’m sorry to hear that.

I do agree, a character being religious and portraying their faith correctly is only good character building. And I really dislike religion. I specially like those plots where said characters end up questioning their own faith and crumbling down as they find out it's all a lie, as well as the way they evolve after it.
Kellyn

Im much more indifferent on that last point. I am not religious but I don’t have anything against religion. At the end of the day I see religion as a tool that can be used to influence people for great good (charity, volunteer work, helping the community) or great evil (war, lgbtq rights suppression, etc). It all depends on who is running the church, and it often isn’t just all good or all evil.  I feel really weird about the idea of rooting for a characters to lose their faith. If they do I want it to be for a compelling reason that pushes the plot forward in a significant way, and not because I am politically against the idea of religion.
DoomMaGeddon

I can't help but look at it from a scientific mindset. Even if it's used for good sometimes, what good is a lie if it's not true? It's like when your parents tell you Santa exists, it's for good, but eventually, it's a lie. I don't think it's the best for oneself to believe in lies, or just believe in things blindly. Questioning things and researching is what has led us to this advanced technology era, as well as the increasing amount of atheists with it.

As for the character, there's a setting I really like in stories, which is struggling with their own beliefs or thoughts being proven wrong, and need to overcome them, growing alongside... or breaking with them. As a hobbyist writer myself, some good development is something I love. I can see this growing into Eli questioning her faith, her parents growing against her for it, and causing her to either stand up to them or run away for her own good, as well as allowing herself to find freedom as for the things she wants to do, like playing Smash Bros Ultimate:tm: with Jean during Netflix:tm: night.

Children in theses religions are conditioned from birth, when it’s all you have ever known it’s harder break free. It is the real reason they “defend the unborn “. It’s easier to get the indoctrination to stick. Mental conditioning is a very messed up thing to deal with/break from.

The simple mention of a creator got you that mad? I hope that high IQ attitude helps you stay happy in life but religion helps other people feel good about themselves and it generally helps community’s of peoples so the right thing when used right because yes religion is a tool and used wrong it will control the minds of people and bring out the worst in them (as in extremism and I’m not just talking about middle eastern ones I mean all the way back to the Christian crusades there has been people who do bad stuff in gods name using religion to justify terrible actions) BUT for most people in modern time religion is useful and needed because like it or not Christian or Muslim ….the belief in a higher power is what keeps a lot of the world spinning because if the world didn’t follow their basic instinct's to not kill rape and murder without feeling guilt and remorse would lead to a pretty fucked up world and if people don’t think that they will get judged in the afterlife(which most people do instinctively feel) then you could just do fucked up shit till someone caught you or you die in a blaze of glory and the world would be filled with pirates and bandits that shoot you before the speak to you and loot everything you have it would be mad max across the world we NEED religion to keep everyone in a peaceful world where EVERYONE is safe.

I would argue with you on the idea that Religion is "NEEDED" in today's society..
There has been some frankly quite terrible things done in the name of religion (Slavery, Genocide) and there still is some pretty terrible stuff being done in the name of religion (Abortion as an example or even ongoing bigotry towards homosexuals)

And i'm sorry.. but if you need the "Fear" of a future punishment after you die to keep you in line.. then you are not a moral person..
Humans are capable of developing morality without the need to pin it to the creeds of a 'god'

Many children who are not indoctrinated learn very early to tell the difference between right and wrong without having to justify it with "Because god say's so"

At the end of the day if you find comfort / peace in believing in a god then more power to you.. but at the same time religion is not the shining bastion that it portrays itself to be..

Damn I feel bad for the girl. Because for me that doesn't come off as "religion is bad", that's bad parenting. This leads me to believe that she has an internal mental conflict with herself A LOT. It wouldn't shock me if her "safe place" is only with her friend because she gets to me more of herself.

I hope she gets to find a way to balance her parents restrictions & the bit of self expression she can afford. She's smart, she can do it.
NeksusCat

Inherently, from the very begining, no religion is bad (aside from those that required blood sacrifices).
It comes down to people that twisted and interpretated religions in the fucked up ways to their own convenience, and continue to do so to this very day.
But that does not remove the fact, that  there's ones that suffer from such side of exaggerated religious preaching.

Oof. And this is how mental illness is born. Poor kid. Girl you go get that boy as much as you want. The angel girl is wrong.

The angel is guilt, the demon is constricted freedom.
In that regard - who is more angelic and who is morendiabolical?

Liberty

That’s not a good thing and if you really feel that way then you should feel remorse or guilt and you should hope it’s forgivable or you just might feel those flames your joking about but I’m not going to pretend to know what happens when we pass you might turn into a frog if the Hindus are right 😂 but regardless I hope you realize that even if we arnt judged in death maybe we should act like it so we don’t have to worry about it and we know we are being the best we can be and not degenerates that hurt people and don’t care…

This is called "Pascal's Wager," in case anyone was curious and wanted to look up arguments about this mindset.

Pascal's Wager and Roko's Basilisk describe the exact same mindset but about different entities, for example.

I can only imagine what I’m about to hear from someone with your username but this is why I call myself and love liberty….because I believe in the freedom to do what you want and be who you want but also understand that it’s other peoples right to freedom to not be around the opposing side of their argument but I like differing views and beliefs so please tell me how this mindset of pascal wager is a bad thing?
Satanist
1 year, 5 months ago
Pascal's Wager posits that only Christianity is a valid religion, which is a non-starter.

If we do the bare minimum and include all other religions in the world in Pascal's Wager, it becomes impossible as several religions require you to do contradictory things, and there is also the possibility that the "right thing to do" is currently unknown, making it pointless.

Roko's Basilisk is similar in that, a superintelligent AI in the far future will punish anyone who did not help build it via simulating the world 1:1 and finding out who did not help to create it, and putting these people in eternal torment.

But yeah, Pascal's Wager is bad because it only works if we assume that one religion is the one true religion, for which there is no evidence for when it comes to any religion.

I'm not here to trashtalk any one religion, I just wanted to point out that this kind of mindset is flawed and unconvincing.

Pretty much. Nobody is scared of being judged other than those who are taught to fear a supposedly all-loving being. Quite ironic.

Not to get all preachy while following this artist and comic but God is not going to come down on you like a ton of bricks, that's something the devil will do.

God's going to let you pick your own way out because he believes in freedom.

Not that he might assist you occasionally but not the way you expect it.

Funny how the angel is being so much worse than the devil could be. Hell, why should she even feel bad about Jean falling off the tree? He was the one being a pervert, and it was Alex who kicked the pizza out of the window and hit Jean. Eli has no reason to feel bad for it. I really hope Eli will just question her faith and reject it eventually.
NeksusCat
1 year, 4 months ago
Given that she likes Jean, I bet she's simply empathetic.
She's horny girl too  despite (or exactly because of?) having religious upbringing.
So she might see Jean peeking at her as pretty flattering attention from her crush?
As fucked up it might soundd to a grown up, kids seek to sate their curiosity with little second thought, especiaply if it's somehow "forbidden".
So she probably really feels for him, hence why she let him cope a feel, as a consolation for his injury and as a sort of exchange for getting an eyefull of his junk. :P
