Traces Left Behind, Chapter 1

Our world is the intersection where time and space exist together. Wherever we go, no matter what we do, we remain constant on this grid, where either space or time will catch up to us.

In the void of space where time does not exist, everything else does. All manner of creature, alive and dead, all manner of life exists at once. A tree exists as a seed and sprout, and with both a crown full of leaves and devoid of them at the same time. An animal is both the single-celled organism it grew from and its adult counterpart. Time does not exist, and therefore they all are constant. Frozen in motion, like a photograph. It is a grotesque world, to be sure, but it exists only to those that escape the boundaries of time. However, no being can exist in this land without time. There are those that can teleport for instantaneous travel that scrape against this realm, but none are even aware of its existence, aside from the Palkia that claim this world as their own.

There is, however, a perpendicular plane that does see travel: that of the plane of time. A multi-colored world where all time exists as one along a set path, every being that exists at a certain point of time is represented by a flame, a soul that burns fiercely until its light is snuffed out. They exist like this because their physical forms exist in space, and this realm has no space for physical forms to exist. Two such beings - species - have been noted to traverse this plane: Dialga, who ensures the progress of time flows without end, and Celebi, a freeform spirit that can travel to whatever time it feels like. The passage of time is not one to mess with easily, and both have to conform to rules that even they may not know about. For one, they are allowed to keep their forms as they enter here, but their sight is limited and their trajectory cannot be changed easily.

From within the strand of the current timeline, a ball of light emerges from it and shows itself to be a Celebi, heading back in time. A second ball of light emerges right behind it. This second being is faster, and catches up to the first Celebi. But...isn't it a Celebi itself? And...wait, what happens if two being clash in this realm?

The colors distort. Static plays. The Celebi shrieks in pain as the mere touching of its body by this first being causes time to warp around them, fusing them together as one and stopping time for them altogether, the two neither falling towards the timeline nor moving away.

Above, a Dialga watches. A seer of all things that happens in the course of time, they are both blessed and cursed with knowledge of past and future events to come. However, even a Dialga cannot know what will happen outside of the timeline, and Celebi often rewrite history themselves. To say the two species share animosity towards one another would be an understatement. Yet, with these two being causing time to tear where they met, this Dialga cannot ignore the pressing need for action, lest the main timeline be affected.

"Yes...I see. The first one here was chased, and this second followed them...but they are not a Celebi, are they? It is too late now to tell..."

The Dialga looks over the two, still and statuesque. Out of the many remedies for this, their destruction would be the most immediately satisfactory course, though that would mean the Celebi would be forfeit. To preserve the life of the Celebi would require a much more delicate approach. Arceus could be called in to help, but by then the timeline would be tainted by their remaining outside of it. The one thing Dialga could do, however...

"I am sorry, travelers...I must right this wrong. Whatever the cost may be, the timeline cannot suffer."

Rearing its head up, the Dialga takes a deep breath. It brings its head down after a moment, and with its mouth agape, it releases a beam that pierces through the Celebi, the being fused with it, and the timeline, leaving a swirling vortex that desperately tries to fix itself. Time rewrites itself. Both the Celebi and the person that followed through with it are separated into body and soul, with the bodies being quickly flung back into the hole in time that was created. The flames, pushed by the beam, follow them, although lagging as they remained for longer.

The red flame of the separate being was flung farther away, as was its body. The green flame of the Celebi was more resilient to the beam, owing to its time-travelling abilities, and it flickered in place, wanting to thank the Dialga for helping them before letting itself be affixed to the timeline once more.

A slideshow of images detailing the Celebi's life flashed before the Dialga as its beam petered out, and the timeline resumed its linear fashion with the green flame firmly reattached. Its constant burning is a sign the Celebi still yet lives.

"Galiana...this trial is yours and yours alone. This was the only way I could save you...forgive me."

Chapter 2

One moment Galiana was rushing to escape her pursuer. The time portal she opened should have safely secured her...but the assailant followed. The last thing she felt before things went dark was something grabbing onto her neck from behind.

Now, however, things were dark. But they were...more than dark. Galiana couldn't even feel from within it. She wasn't even sure if she was still alive, because she couldn't feel her body...yet she was still conscious. She could tell time was flowing...without her. But, she thought, what sorry state was she in?

Feeling as though nothing was going to happen if she was going to stay still, she tried moving...but there was nowhere to move. The dark expanse expanding in all directions around her was devoid of any landmarks. She couldn't even see her body to gauge distance, if such a thing existed where she was at. A different strategy needed to be employed.

She began pulling from her abilities as a Celebi, and began to inch forward through time; instead of taking a tunnel as she did before, this acted much like a camera shutter exposing a subject to light repeatedly over a short period of time. Eventually, Galiana got used to feeling like she was moving through time, carving herself into the timestream as a scar.

A dense forest. Night. Galiana saw the first few glimpses of the world. Yet things didn't feel right still - she couldn't 'feel', not the air, not the ground under her. She could look around and move, but it felt as though she was a ghost. Her body seemed to have disappeared altogether, with her conscious remaining in a separated state. Despite this, she was distinctly alive.

By constantly flipping through the seconds like pages, she was getting a faux-feel of the world. Small, short instances of feeling a cool breeze. Feeling the air pressure of the world as it was. Awareness that she was being watched...with some trouble, Gali managed to move herself to face the bright eyes peering at her from behind a tree. Then came the trouble of speaking...

...a horrific moan escaped from the figure. Galiana's time travel and lack of a physical body manifested itself as a blob of pitch-black shadow. Yet even if she was visible wasn't all too clear to her, as her voice upset the hiding creature - a Haunter - who clearly didn't see her. She attempted to move closer, an image flickering in and out of existence, a being devoid of light moving closer. For a Ghost-type, the Haunter seemed quite scared of this new sight, and not knowing if it was friend or foe, decided to turn invisible and flee to a safer location.

Galiana sighed, still flickering in and out of the current spot she was in. If she had her body, she wouldn't look like a threat at all. If she had her body, her unassuming voice would have coaxed help from the Haunter. She was entirely convinced she was without a real form now - a spirit without a husk. That begged the question: if she was without her body, where was it? How could it be found? A Celebi is a rare species, so finding it wouldn't be hard in a crowd, but if it was without a consciousness, it might be lying somewhere, in danger's way. Her body might suffer repercussions from being separated from herself if she waited too long...finding it was important. Getting back into it moreso.
Then, Gali felt it: a small, otherworldly pull. She felt inclined to travel in a certain direction, perhaps ushered on by her body yearning to be reunited with her self. Perhaps due to her body retaining a portion of her time travelling powers, enough to where she can feel herself in two locations at once. Yet, she's unable to feel much more than that, not anything her body is potentially feeling, and not where it may be.

The constant jumping forward in time did not seem to wear down Galiana's energy, but it felt as though something was ebbing away from her. She didn't particularly care much to wait around to find out what exactly she was losing, so with all the strength she could muster, she tried moving forward through the dark expanse of trees towards where she believed her body to be.

The night hid her movements from sight, but she could still be heard floating through the woods. A sharp, high-pitched static-like noise followed her when she made her movements, scaring away any bugs, ghosts, or other nocturnal creature that may be prowling about. Considering her rapid and constant movement through time, it was a small price to pay to exist. The same cannot be said of the person that followed her before...she wondered if they suffered the same fate. A spirit without a body, and no way to return to it. Trapped in the void between life and death, where time doesn't exist. Not the punishment she would wish upon them, or anybody - but one she didn't know would happen.

After a while of moving through the forest, Galiana finally made her way out into a residential area. It was here that Galiana realized that she may not be seeing things correctly, as without a body, she's not processing the information as eyes normally would - in her case, being entirely colorblind. The shroud of night she believed she was in may just be her not being able to see if it is light or dark. The shadowy figure kept moving, certain that she'd lose the trail of her body if she stopped to rest...if she even COULD rest.

Then, there she was - Galiana's body, lying out in the middle of the front yard of someone's house. Strangely, her body was the only thing fully-colored in Galiana's time-restricted sight, but that only convinced her further that the body was hers. She rushed over to it, not knowing just how she'd handle re-entry into her own body, but she took the chance to just merge her spirit with it and see what happens. As the shadow took over the Celebi body, she could feel her senses coming to. The world began to fill with color again, and her rapid movements through time came to a halt as she felt it begin to flow around her. It was only after taking the first few sweet breathes of relief and freedom that she realized that there was still something...missing.

She sat up in the yard, taking in the sights, smells, the feeling of the grass under her. As she believed her turmoil to be over, she moved to get up, but she seemed entirely devoid of energy. Owing it to the stress of time travel, Galiana thought it best to find somewhere to sleep and think on her situation further. She attempted to fly to no avail. Flapping her wings didn't seem to work either. Trying to concentrate her psychic powers as a Celebi into her hands didn't seem to have any effect. She was usually able to at least perform some of these tasks even when sleep deprived, so she thought it weird she wasn't able to do any of it...until she looked at her hands. Now, instead of her world being devoid of color, she was.

PCC - Viridian City Showdown Series
+3
Old story originally posted to FA.

I originally wrote these chapters to explain the origins of Gali coming to the 'current' timeline, separate from the events before the start, but my interest in continuing this sadly died down as it became harder to think of plot points and with more interesting things occupying the mind. Sad, but ultimately expected.

(Inkbunny won't embed subsequent text files, so you'll have to download them to see them. Sorry! Just how Inkbunny works.)
