Skylar envisioning himself as a team captain in the popular sport known in the Varlin language as Tarrik. Conceptually, the game is a cross between Ultimate and king-of-the-hill, with points earned being dependent on the number of passes made during a play. Skylar longs to play the sport professionally, but his father, the Chieftain of Varlin, forbids it, stating that it is below the station of their family. Skylar is left only with his longings as he is forced to study histories, politics, and logic.
