This is exactly a more logical way I think the story could go, I mean, the boy's life was ruined from the very beginning by the adults in his life and all she has to say to that is "I didn't chose you because you don't genuinely desire to protect people" despite already knowing the awful psychological damage his parents had done to him.
I don't think that after this she deserves to have her prediction proven correct, I think he deserves retribution, show her how badly things can go for someone like him when you have so little care for the negative consequences of your actions over a boy that was abandoned to his own luck and never be helped by anyone, not even you when you had the power to prevent it.

She did tell him that when he was much younger and he refused to believe her. She tried to encourage him to find that desire to protect and try again, but his bitterness at how his own parents suddenly rejected him when he was not chosen on the first time made him refuse to listen. He chose to hold onto that feeling of betrayal and turned his hatred towards everything around him. He wanted to hurt everyone, especially those with any connection to those he deemed responsible for being rejected. I blame Nigel's parents more than anything. They were colder than ice after he was not selected. They also just let him run away without any noted efforts to find him. Nigel has had a lot stacked against him, but some of it has been his own doing.

I really don't think the ToL knows just how bad their guardians are...this is just seeming like it will spiral wildly out of control, her good intentions backfiring spectacularly like a fireworks display gone wrong.

I think that... The actual problem is that she knows, and might as well be unable to actually do something about it.
She created a situation that she needs to dig herself out of and... I think that's what she's betting on doing with the new protectors. We already know who the cast'll be, and... Well, they're nothing like the others are they?

As for Tristan I hope he becomes Nigel's first friend. He might be the only one who get past that walls Nigel built around himself. And they do have the potential to make the other better.
I can see Nigel's spirit breaking. I hope this doesn't break him completely. This is probably the worst day in his life, Ironic that it's the day he will become a knight. (The day he's wanted to happen for so long.) I'm not sure he even wants to be one anymore, The tree might have told Nigel to never give up but this might be the thing that makes Nigel give up.
I kinda hope he doesn't meet with Toby, after such a traumatic experience he might say something he will regret later. And Nigel and Toby should meet when they're both ready. Which Nigel clearly isn't.
I still hope Nigel gets the best ending.
