You cut each apple one third off, and you will end up with two two thirds for two people and you get two one thirds for the third.

That's the obvious, non-brutal answer.  I assume the other 'correct' answer is not usually thought of, unless they're a member of the Addams family.  The real math trick is figuring out where to cut an irregular spheroid to get a third, and then doing both apples at once with the same blade.

When I read up on that riddle, the violent option (removing one consumer) was actually the correct one back in 1989.
Another morbid option is to cut both apples and one person in half, so you have 4 parts and 4 consumers.
However, you could also sell the knife and buy a third apple, though.

Cutting both apples into 2/3 an giving the third person the two 1/3 parts is the smartest solution in my opinion, though. ^^

Hahaha)
That's some nice out of the box thinking, kudos. The "smartest" (or, rather, boring) solution is the only one that I came up with.
