In his house at R'lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits dreaming
For when reality fails to intimidate, one must go beyond to that which transcends reality itself. Truly, there is nothing more terrifying then the untapped mind; an unfettered imagination can concoct horrors the likes of which can never be visualized. The unyielding fear of the unknown and our desperate attempt to understand it is something that ironically connects and separates us all...
Cthulhu and the Lovecraftian mythos as a whole is one that's always captivated me. There's something about that raw, inexplicable nature of it that draws one is, as it goes against our very nature to find explanations for things. Cthulhu was one I planned from the very get go to give second or first place to for those very reasons I just listed but there's a personal reason for that decision as well. While I started these in 2007, I don't really consider them officially starting until 2008. It was the first month long countdown and it was an event. Back then I had the time-(and naivate)-to draw each picture daily. It was a stupid decision that I stuck with for longer then I care to admit, but there was also something kind of exhilarating about it. It made every day of the month special. I had no set theme, no set ranking system, hell I had no set roster! I was flying completely off the cuff and while it was total madness, I do look back on the time fondly.
So as winner of that "very first" countdown, Cthulhu had to place among the best of the best, if only for the nostalgic reasons alone... but here we are, in the final hour. We've faced death, reality and eldritch horror. What could possibly best that which should not be? We shall have to see come Halloween... and don't look into my gallery to find out for yourself or anything. That would be cheating!
