It was Deets and Kris’ birthday on October 19 - a date I picked because the astrology of October 19, 2002 fits them near-perfectly.

So I started drawing this as a kind of 20th-birthday portrait, which I think starts to show how they’re growing and changing as they grow up.

Dieter’s discovered he has a love for metal (and happily, Kris is a fan). Dieter’s taken up the hurdy gurdy and plays in a Sabarinian folk metal outfit where his eerie elken bugling adds a unique dimension when they play in taverns. He’s also apprenticed to Bruno as a carpenter and is learning mercantilism through his affiliation with the Doregallian Institute of Carpenters.

Kristian’s still a fruitcake but is attending college, in amongst doing odd jobs which vary from spicy-dancing at RUT, to seasonal work down at the Stillwater Docks caulking and rigging the ships that get hauled out at the end of the summer, before the Viridian storms kick up.

My focus with these two and their world is to blend elements of the contemporary with a ‘better’ world; one in which industrialisation never occurred, preserving the better aspects of the Enlightenment without the environmental terrorism we’ve inflicted on our world. This manifests in ‘little’ things like trying to find a balance between familiar modernity like mechanical flight, electricity, digitisation, and the classic elements of a society more in tune with its natural setting like hand-production of most things, small-scale agriculture, the maintenance of guilds and artisans in favour of mass-production etc.

This piece is still a WIP, just uploading the inks and base colours because I LOVE how they’re coming together!
