Gonna take this opportunity to talk about about this insectoid alien specie i created for Alessa's story (the captain and co-pilot are a couple of these, i just haven't managed to come up with a good name for either them nor the species yet lol)
They're sometimes rudely referred to as "spiders" or "arachnids", but they consider this a slur and thus takes offense at it. Mainly because they aren't arachnids at all and would be closer compared to earth moths than arachnids.
These moth aliens are a common sight in the known space. Once they acquired space faring technology they were quick to spread throughout the galaxy, but not by violent methods. They are generally a benevolent and peaceful people, and are somewhat famous for being very friendly and hard working.
However, they are at the same time considered quite controversial and might sometimes find themselves unwelcomed by other species. And that is because of their societal and reproduction norms.
They are a matriarchal run society, because their males are more or less reduced to breeding stock. Not because of any discrimination or oppression, but because of their biology. It simply wouldn't make sense for them to put males in any leadership roles.
Males are not only about half the size of the females, but whereas females have a lifespan of around 200 Earth years, males rarely make it past twenty after they reach sexual maturity. They also unfortunately pass away after mating, after which the female will consume their bodies as nutrients for her eggs.
Many considers it a barbaric and cruel system, but to them it is natural. It's simply how their biology evolved to work, and not something they chose.
And what they fail to realize is that while males don't get to rule thanks to their short lives, they instead live fairly carefree and full lives. They are treated almost like royalty, as a way to thank them for their future sacrifice.
This does mean that close relationships and partnering is illegal. Falling in love is about as prohibited as it can be.
But, as with everything else, there are outsiders who break these rules. Alessa's friends, the two moth aliens, are runaways from their homeplanet. After they met and fell in love, they decided to run away into the stars together and live together. At least, for as long as he is able to.
So here's a female of this for now unnamed moth alien species thingie~
Females are, as stated, quite a bit taller than the males. Often reaching 2 meters and above in height, sans sensory antennaes.
Females also have bigger abdomens and shorter antennae than the males. They have four eyes, and while their bodies are covered by a type of exoskeleton, it isn't made out of chitin like that of Earth's insects. But by the much softer keratin. Hence, they don't need to shed like our insects do either, as their exoskeleton grows with them.
They don't have ears and noses, as their sensory antennae works as both, and like our insects they breathe from their abdomen as well. However, while their language is made up of clicks,whirrs, hisses, pheromones and body language, they are capable of all manner of speech and auditory languages as well. And especially those off-planet individuals are very eager to learn as many languages as they can.
Goddamn i really need to find a name for these guys lmao
