She hit the wrong nail.

I've learned a long time ago to hold a nail in a pair of pliers until I get it started...Pliers feel no pain if they are hit.

Pliers do help.  Another trick I've heard of is to use a folded piece of cardboard which one would use in place of the pliers.  At least there would be less worry of messing up one's pliers by accident.

I always use a cheap Harbour Freight brand pair of pliers for that purpose anyway.
