Aww, that is sweet.  Also how debates should never be personal and how even if there is some minor disagreement, it shouldn't end friendships.

You're not the only one hating this decade to no end. x.x"

It is a thing of beauty and a message to behold.

The art of Debate is being lost as it is not being taught in school anymore. And that is a sad thing to lose. One does not have to be personally involved in a debate to prove a point, but to be able to do whether they personally agree to it or not. It is a skill that one needs, especially in some professions like Lawyers and the Interpretation of the Law, Ambassadors and Political Leaders.

It's not just that, it's the devolution of why people hold these views. A great example of this is immigration. in the 2010s, both sides could debate the economic benefits or pitfalls to having an open or closed border. In the 2020s, it feels the view on the border is opposite exclusively because the other party wants it a certain way. They have their views for the sake of it, rather for any researched or ideological reason. The Position is the reason unto itself.

This can go for other things that I'd rather not talk about because I don't want to start a war in the comments...

I feel you, Javi. Nowadays you can't even ask certain subjects, and people might do a mental gynastic and assume it's offensive.

I feel the same way. it's hard to do the debate thing anymore when politics have gotten so volatile and...well...anti-democratic. Especially as an American, being faced with a 2-party system that is so thoroughly divided that one party will oppose the other out of principal rather than for any well-thought out reasoning.

scary times, these 2020s...I miss the days when debate between a Liberal and a Conservative could lead to some degree of compromise...

Yeah, I agree, this decade(s?) are unbearable.
Can't say a word without starting a fire in the comments, offending someone or something else.
I like friendly discussions about stuff, and would love to discussions to never touch any political crap, but nowadays you just can't have a conversation without one way or another dipping into politics somehow, or again, offending someone. x_x

This toxicity is born from a truly evil statement: "the personal is political." People need to be able to distance themselves from politics, and this used to be accepted by mainstream parties. When you remove that distinction, everything you do - the films you watch, the clothes you wear, the people you talk to - becomes an act of political activism.

My partner was assaulted for voting Leave over Brexit. Turns out that there are some well-to-do Labour voters who don't like the working class when we dare to have our own opinions, and the woman who did it did a fine job of convincing me to start voting Conservative. After all, no Tory ever threw a drink in my face for having a different opinion to them on the issues of the day.

Decade?  If only this issue was so short lived.  This is just politics in general.  And especially in the US it's only gotten worse.

I remember a time in my youth when friends from different parties could argue politics and stay friends. Extremism was frowned upon, instead of the default mode.

I forget people exist like this because I turn the screen off, life is pretty sick when you get your eyes back on the road.

its all memes, turning everyone away from each other to fix the future? I'm already saved.

The worst is over - they spent a decade entrenching themselves, brought it all down with sheer incompetence (and a rabid refusal to even consider anything saner), and are now getting kicked out. Might take longer for the plutofeudalists (and anybody with blackmail) but their days as a movement are numbered.

Yeah I feel that. Folks these days seem to assume the worst of anyone who doesn't share their views, and trying to convince someone of your views can be seen as a grevious sleight.

I consider myself lucky to be able to keep friends with different political views. Generally they're all good people, they just have different information sources they trust, and different experiences. They don't want to exterminate or do serious harm to anyone. In the worst case, they're worried that others are going to do harm to them... But I see so many folks scoff at the idea that 'the enemy' would be afraid of them, on either side of any controversey.

Anyways yeah, you're not the only one who makes a lot of awkward and often reflexive statements like that. Sympathies.

As we move deeper into the digital space, I am afraid the divide will grow larger still. The algorithms carve up the middle because that's where the money is. Anything divisive, sensational, humerous.. It will all speak to different segments and allow left and right-leaning people alike to sit smugly in their own bubbles, throwing pepples at each other, instead of conversing and debating.
Even popular debators, on either side, vids are always "watch X DESTROY Y" instead of picking the discourse apart for valid views on either side
And you won't even know the other side exist, other than a sort of boogieman, because the algorithms won't even put it in your feed!

Man, this hits way too hard.  It's sad that even in a friendly debate between people these kinds of things need to be said.  Everyone screams wolf when nothing is wrong or even the smallest view of theirs is challenged.  I welcome a nice civil discussion about things and seeing them from another persons point of view when they can bring facts and such to the table and not just hateful words and paranoia.

It's fine to just say what you think!
And if someone gets offended, it's ok to say it again.

don't worry it'll get worse and you'll remember the good old days when people only yelled at you for having an opinion.
