An art friend is trying to teach me some pointers, like colour values and such. I... can't seem to grasp it... I feel kind of retarded, but I have my limits. When I say I struggle with Art, I literally mean it. I really REALLY struggle... Drawing and colouring does not come naturally or easily to me.
Ah well, here is a quick and dirty sample sketch I made to do some experiments with. Poor Aiden, stuck in Time Out again. Here's hoping this doesn't go on the Popular page, it belongs in Scraps!... >_<

One of the lessons I remember most from 3D modelling courses was lighting & illumination. You have to be careful of where you place lighting or it can disturb the entire picture. For example, if the lighting is outside (the sun) it's impossible for the wall inside the house to be illuminated by it. The sun area at most would be a box on the floor.

It takes practice…., and what you’ve got is a good start!  Me, I paint with oil’s, and when I add shadow to an image it takes thought;  and yes I mess up about 50% of the time, and I’ve been painting for 20 years.

Your advantage is your working digitally, and can modify your value and balance at will.   With oil’s my window of opportunity is limited by how moist & pliable the paint remains.

Pay more attention to how light behaves in a room especially through windows and keep in mind what time of day you're going for and the shape of the house.
You don't want to establish a window as being facing south and then draw a clear sunrise happening outside it.
Try taking pictures of rooms in different times of the day and really watch how sunlight lights a room. You'll probably want to turn your cameras exposure up some so it won't look really dark because cameras aren't as sensitive to light as our eyes.
