Foxen is not going to have autosaving. The save-game system is going to be baked into the game as a primary feature involving save points!

Those save points are Bundt, a goat who discovered the secret of time travel, and proudly and valiantly uses this power to make sure we're in the best timeline at all times.

When a Bundt is in a different place in time, a statue of him is left behind. Bonking him on the head returns him to the current time so you can ask him to remember your face (Save your game).

You can have 3 (maybe 5) saves per playthrough, saved in chronological order. When you save again after that, your oldest save is lost. Smacking Bundt will delete the save he has stored, so that's how you go back to older saves, or strategically manage your stored save files by removing saves before progressing.

Each Bundt also has a profession. Some of them tell jokes, some make candy, some make candles, etc. Each one has a unique thing they can give you, sell you, buy from you, etc. based on their profession (Such as temporary buff items, light sources for dark areas, alchemy ingredients, etc).

They are Bundt. The Guardians Of All Time.

make saving use energy of savepoints and you gotta need items to replenish savepoint energy

Activating a save point in the first place requires finding their Bundthammer somewhere nearby. More convenient save locations have harder to find hammers!

I also love the energy idea, maybe make it use XP to save, so you get more XP overall if you save less!

that more exp and fewer saves could work like in ffXV
there you get percentage boni on the aquired expthe more you collect between rest/save the more you earn extra.
you can be nice and let the character earn a small extra reward like dunno deluxe sweets that gave small boni like 5% movementspeed or 2% extra magical spellpower as a reward

lol sugarrush +10% on all stats  for one encounter/set amount of time followed by withdrawl -20% for the next 2 encounters/twice previous time
that would fit perfectly with little kids first going zoomie and then needing a naptime.

but hey those are justzt ideas. its your game and your work on programing ^^" i just like to balance things out to prevent bad scaling
