Nicholas was a fox that got his name The Shadow due to his ability to blend in and strike swift and quick from the shadows. He was known for his tracking skills and his skill with a bow though some thought he had some sort of strange magic placed on the bow to never miss. He is the husband of an unnamed fox and the father of Edelguard.
In the book Redwall A young an adventurous Nicholas first met Matthias when he encountered him being carried by Myrtle after he failed to stop Cluny’s attack on the village where he was resting at the time after he had left Lilygrove. Later after they had all arrived at Redwall Abbey he took up residence there and wanted to start a new life and break free of how others viewed his kind as vermin. During his stay he helped the monks by repairing anything that was broken or gathering supplies. When Cluny first visited Redwall and demanded that Redwall Abbey be surrendered to him and also witnessing Matthias's bravery in that moment he eventually sworn an oath of brotherhood with the young warrior. During Cluny’s siege of Redwall Abbey Nicholas took up his bow and lead a company of archers where he spent most of the siege defending the abbey alongside others like Basil Stag Hare as Matthias went to search for the sword of Martin. After the death of Cluny the Scourge he eventually finds love with a female fox and together start a family.

During the Summer of the Golden Plain when Slagar and his band appeared disguised as a preforming circus trick them into allowing them to stay the night and preform a show after the young ones wanted to see them preform which lead to them being put to sleep and the little ones taken. When the effects wore off and everyone woke to find the children were missing he accompanied Matthias, Basil Stag Hare and Jess Squirrel on their mission to rescue the kidnapped children one being his own daughter. During the battle of Malkariss he received his only wound in his life after he pushed Basil away from a sneak attack. He later returned with the others back to Redwall Abbey where he, his wife and his daughter shared a loving embrace. After several seasons he put down his bow for the final time and took to instructing the other’s of the abbey in the fine art of archery just encase they were ever needed.
Personality
Nicholas is a free spirited and adventurous sort with a tactical mind that can also show respect when it's due even if he does not like them such as despite hating Cluny much like the others he would admit Cluny despite all that was a cunning leader with the various schemes.
