I remember back in 2009 when I was just getting back in touch with the substrata of Sonic the Hedgehog media surrounding the 1993 animated series simply entitled Sonic the Hedgehog. I found it a LOT more flawed than I remembered and always heard it spoken about, but still a very worthy and well above-average children's cartoon for the early 90s; the art direction and animation itself were of very good quality, the voice acting was generally on point, and it was USUALLY serious and dramatic when it wanted to be and funny when it wanted to be. I could name three times that series really let me down out of its two seasons, and one of those had the excuse of being the pilot episode when they were stretching out and seeing if they could differentiate it from the concurrent animated adaptation of the Sonic games called The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.

So I wound up at some point having a dream aping the tone of the cartoon. The villain's minions saying "Surrender and die!" and him responding with "I will never surrender! You'll have to take me alive!" and fighting back against them being one of the focal moments of the dream that amused me so much I decided to write a story I can only call a pseudo-fanfic of it.

So the hero of my not-Sonic story was sort of an amalgam of Sonic and Antoine. He had pink fur and was named Rene because I've always been amused by leaning against gender stereotypes and window dressing while affirming the underlying truths of the sexes. All the men of this world had swords made of bone that would naturally grow out of their backs, and all women had pouches which violated the usual rules of dimensional space and allowed them to hold up to a single adult man's volume inside of them. The clothing style was for men to wear shorts of a color as close as possible matching their fur, and for women to do similar with bathing suits. Gloves and shoes appropriate to whatever work they did in any sort of color, matching or not, were optional.

He was in the underground resistance movement slated to reinstate the rightful monarchy and depose the evil dictator who'd conquered their capitol city. He was in the top 1% when it came to easily measured metrics of ability - strength, speed, intelligence, stamina, etc. but socially withdrawn, having almost no friends and usually trying to run solo missions rather than trying to coordinate or cooperate with a group.

On one such solo mission, he was flung into the future by seven years. He encountered enemy minions too tough for him to beat - robots made of an alloy even stronger than bone! The coyote was captured, then rescued by a she-wolf applying fire powers. He was too beaten to resist her stuffing him into her pouch and then activate one of their group's emergency teleport items - magical wing-shaped nuts or fruits or something that grew on a tree in the middle of their base, but only up to three of them a week. When broken open with the correct magic word, they would teleport the user back to the foot of the tree - and here's the reason that despite lacking swords and being physically weaker, women would go on these missions - anyone inside of a person doing this would be brought along too, effectively doubling the usage of these things.

Thus was Rene introduced to Becky/Bekah, and his future self. He learned he had an exceptional power of his own related to time travel, and had accidentally used it on himself. He learned that the future Rene was a possible future about to be subverted, just as he'd done with the slightly worse timeline of the future Rene before him, and in seven years' time he could impart advice to his own past self. The future Rene he was talking to had heard from his own future about another pocket of survivors, but found their town only after the villain had razed it and killed or robotomized everyone. This future Rene had instead gone to that village, helped them fight off the raiding party, and married Bekah, but a power misfire on their honeymoon left him permanently sterile.

And so, when given advice on how to handle fire powers with care and some blueprints to bring back to the engineers of seven years prior and bootstrap their various mechanical projects, Rene was returned to the past.

I wrote a sequel story, but never did get enough interest to make three, four, or seven. Just two. It might've been better if I'd just left it at one.
