Marth (also: Mars, Mareth) was the semi-legendary founder of the United Kingdom of Archanea, the most successful successor state of the original Archanean Kingdom. Renowned as "The Hero King," he is credited with establishing a lasting peace after extended periods of external threat and internal upheaval on the continent.
Historical Background
it is established by historical record that Marth was a Prince of a vassal state of Archanea, likely one of the island kingdoms on the continents periphery and traditionally identified as the Kingdom of Altea. He participated in the Archanea-Dolhr Wars and the Archanean Religious Wars, retold in legend as the War of Shadows and War of Heroes. Historical accounts credit his leadership with bringing decisive ends to both conflicts and forging a lasting peace. By the end of his life, he had united the continent under his leadership.
Legend
Marth's heroics seeded many legends, elevating him to an almost deific figure. According to most traditional accounts, Marth was exiled from his home after the murder of his father. He then amassed an army including many mythic and historical heroes, as well as his future consort, Caeda, to face the invading forces of Dolhr, often depicted in legend as a realm of demi-human monsters and magicians. After slaying the legendary emperor Medeus, Marth is said to have been struck by a curse in battle and retreated to his reconstituted Kingdom of Altea to be treated by Caeda.
It is said that he then re-emerged stronger than before to serve the emperor Hardin. Unbeknownst to him, Hardin was turned against him by the sorcerer Gharnef. Many retellings also focus on how Gharnef used his magic to exploit Marth's curse. However, Marth eventually defeated the sorcerer and reestablished the Archanean Kingdom with himself as ruler.
Symbolism
Marth is often associated with swords, particularly his traditionally recognized personal weapon, the Falchion. He is also associated with horses, despite few depictions or accounts of him on horseback. Some traditional art depicts Marth as a horse, and even "Marth horses" have been erected as statues representing him. Many figurative connections have been suggested by legend, most relating to his martial prowess, and a few to his beauty. Less common legends say that Marth was sired by a stallion, or that he could transform into a horse at will.
Tomb
Scholarly consensus says that Marth died peacefully while preserving his kingdom for his heirs, but his tomb has remained missing for centuries. A royal tomb discovered by scholars and mages caused much excitement when the names "Marth" and "Caeda," were found carved on the walls. However, the only remains identified were of an adult woman and two steeds, a pegasus and an ordinary stallion.
