Hehehe! In D&D every dragon gathers riches that they give value. A hoard usually consists about coins and gems, but also magical weapons and tomes(of magic and/or knowledge), very precious artworks like a statue or painting, and even servants of beauty!
My main OC is a D&D black dragoness (evil), and hoards a vast amount of material wealth as well as magical artefacts, and even slaves, since a part of this treasure needs to be offered to the Evil Dragon God, the Dark Mother, Tiamat, to keep me in her good grace, and so I can hold onto my rank as Her High-Priestess...So yeah, my hoard is ever growing and ever reduced.
But, the real hoard I value the most is: Old Coins! Why? Black Dragons are borderline sociopaths, malevolent egoists and sadists. An old coin -be it valuable or worthless- of a long time dead civilization holds a sadistic value to Black Dragons: The knowledge that that civilization is dead for good, while we prevail and live on!
Black Dragons are survivalists, hunt/attacks from ambush and only if they are sure to win the fight, and will retreat if possible, and plot revenge. A living Black Dragon is the solid proof to the fact, that it outlived every challenge, and thus is a dangerous (or tactically coward) foe to deal with! For us, a long dead civilization's proof in the form in a coin is their sign of failure, and gives us a perverse sadistic pleasure. We are alive, and they are not!
So you, see, a dragon's hoard consists of items that we gave value to! =:3

i just like the idea of dragons collecting whatever they like and feel if every single dragon collected gold and gems why would the other people use it for money instead of something else.

I know a story where a dragon basically hoarded a whole community of people acting like the crazy cat lady in a sense by owning the community and its people... or maybe more like a kid with an ant farm.

Hehehe! That's Kaidou from One Piece! He's a high level pirate one of the four Warlords of the Sea, very durable, kind of unkillable as in He failed to suicide Himself multiple times even...and His Devil Fruit power is to turn into a HUGE Japanese Dragon, and holds a whole country (named Wano) and it's citizens hostage, and cuts off the country from the rest of the world... ...until (MINOR SPOILER AHEAD!) 2022.05.30-ish very the main protagonist saved everyone...not a big shock there.

In the PC game "Kyrandia 2 : The Hand of Fate" there is the item Alchemist Stone, which is used to turn lead to gold...and gold to lead. It's used to steal a gold tooth turning it to worthless lead, and latter to turning a solid gold mirror (focusing the sunlight into a hot beam) into a non reflective lead wall... Hope this Kobold doesn't have such an OP item! Would ruin the dragons treasure for good... ...and there it is how she can defeat the dragon: Attack His hoard! Use very corrosive acid, and melt away His gold! He'll surrender for sure!!!! >XD

Basically the only thing I remember from that game was that it introduced me to the tower of Hanoi. That and the weird Yeti cave stage that took way longer than it had any right to.

You too was dragged back into the Love Cave one time too much, eh? ~♥ XD
Star Wars KotOR also has a Tower of Hanoi puzzle, but with plasma / hologram disks inside of a Sith Lord's tomb on Korriban. Thanks to my Kyrandia 2 training, I have beaten it with ease...enjoyed it even. Saw streamers struggle with it like crazy! XD
