My dude here has got some hammerspace lungs, able to hold in way more air than it seems like he should. He can exhale enough for a sizeable air pocket in one go, rest his lungs in it for a while, then just suck it all back up and keep swimming. Even this much air is only about a fifth of what his lungs can hold!

A super self-indulgent piece that made me realize I'm into characters blowing huge bubbles underwater, so expect to see more of that eventually.

squirtlerocks07 and I did an RP based on this.

S: in an underwater cave, this lizard was exploring the area and having a good time with it, he felt low on breath so he decided to make an air pocket using huge bubbles... as he was doing that, a Wartortle was swimming by, looking a little breathless as his face is red, he didn't see the lizard nor the newly formed air pocket above him

L: The lizard almost doesn't notice the wartortle, but he does. He waves to them and, noticing their red face, gestures up to the air pocket before swimming up there himself.

S: sighing out bubbles in relief the wartortle waves back and goes up into the air pocket with the lizard, gasping for breath
"Hi there! I almost didn't even see this air pocket! Thanks for directing me here!"

L: "No problem! Lucky you just happened across me, huh? There is NOT much air in this cave system..."

S: "No there is not... I was thankful I just got here and haven't been stuck or anything, and I'm glad I could have a fresh breath... I'm normally adventurous but I didn't feel that way today"

L: "I know the way out, if you want to leave. Sounds to me like you're not that big on exploring underwater caves."

S: "It's not that I'm not interested in exploring them, I am... I'm just casually swimming through here cause I was bored today and had nothing else to do, and the adventurous side of me decided to stay away from me today I guess"

L: "Ah, okay. Well, should be a lot more casual now that you're not alone in here, huh?"

S: "Yeah, definitely... it's nice to have someone else with me, since all of my other friends are chickens and don't wanna come down with me, heh..."

L: "Can't blame them, not everyone can hold their breath long enough to really look around in caves like this."

S: "Nope, but some of my friends are perfectly capable of coming, it's just that they are scared... litteraly all of my friends are too scared to come underwater with me, it's like a curse or something...so it's finally nice to meet someone who could potentially be my dive buddy, oh I'm Winston by the way...I'm a wartortle"

L: "And I'm Garry! We may as well stick together while we're checking this place out, huh?"

S: "Yeah I don't mind! And nice to meet you Garry!"

L: "No need to worry about air, by the way. Believe it or not, I actually made this air pocket just with what's in my lungs!"

S: "Huh?? Really? I thought this air pocket was natural or something! That's really cool!"

L: "Yep, watch this!" Garry starts inhaling deeply, and the water level rises up by a few inches before he exhales again, putting it back to normal. "An air pocket this size takes only about 10% of what I can hold in."

S: "Wow! That's awesome! I guess you can hold your breath for a pretty long time then huh?"

L: "Sure can, my record's about an hour and a half! I bet you've got a pretty respectable time, yourself!"

S: "Whaaa, an hour and half?! For a lizard that's pretty impressive! My best time is about 40 minutes but it's been a long time since I've set that record"

L: "Nice! And with me being able to make air pockets - and blow huge bubbles you can breathe, by the way - you'll be able to stay even longer than that!"

S: "Very true! Anyways, enough talk...let's continue swimming through this cave" Winston starts to take some deep breathes

L: "Of course!" Garry starts sucking all the air back in, slowly enough that Winston has plenty of time to get ready.

S: Winston keeps taking deep breathes and eventually he takes one big breath and holds it in, ready to go back underwater

L: Garry speeds up his inhaling, and within a few seconds he's holding everything in again, the air pocket entirely gone. He gives Winston a thumbs-up, then begins to swim through the cave with them.

S: Winston gives a thumbs up back and follows Garry through the cave, wondering if there's gonna be anything interesting

L: The two find a much larger area before too long, with some fish happening to be swimming through as well. Garry smiles at the sight of them.

S: Winston smiles as well with his puffy cheeks, letting a few bubbles loose as he swims a bit closer to the fish

L: One of the fish smiles at Winston and waves at him with a fin, though it doesn't seem able to talk.

S: Winston happily smiles back at the fish and waves back, giving it a gentle pet on their head

L: The fish stops to let Winston pet them, while Garry comes over to watch the two, smiling as well.

S: Winston's smile grows as the fish stopped, continuing to pet them and even give them a little hug

L: The fish happily hugs him back with their fins.

Garry: "Mabln, Ibl wiblsh Ibl cobluld tablk tblo thblem, thblat'd mablke thblis evblen bebltteblr..."

S: "You and mble both Garrbly..."
Winston keeps hugging the fish for a bit longer, then pulls away before going back to Garry so they can keep exploring, a little sad afterwards as he seemed to really enjoy his time with that fish

L: The fish understands the two need to move on, and gives them one last wave before swimming away.

Garry gives Winston a hug to help him feel better.

S: Winston hugs Garry back, trying to cheer himself up
"That was sbluch a cute fiblsh...I hope I see thblem around again... anyways lblets keep going"

L: "Yeblah, itbl'd ble coblol tblo hblang oublt wiblth thblem loblngeblr..." Garry starts swimming again, looking around for anything else of interest.

S: "Yeah..." Winston tries to not let the sadness get to him as he swims after Garry, looking for something cool, but his mind is drifting back to the fish he met as there doesn't seem to be anything else here for what they can see

L: Garry decides to start walking on the bottom instead for a while. "Yoblu shobloulbld trbly thblis oublt, mablybe itbl'll hblelp geblt yoblur miblnd ofblf thblem."

S: "Huh?" Winston notices Garry walking on the bottom
"Oh, I've dblone thblat before..." he then let's himself sink down to stand on the bottom and walk along with Garry, his face a bit red

L: The two walk together for a little while, before Garry trips on something, managing to keep from falling because of the water. "Mmblubl! Whblat wabls..." He looks down... It seems to be a stone brick of some kind.

S: "Are yblou alright?" Winston goes to check on Garry before noticing the stone brick, wondering what it is
"Hmm..."

L: "Thblis wobluldbln't jublst foblrm... Whblat iblf thblerebl's soblme kiblnd oblf rublin neblarbly?" Garry starts getting excited at the prospect of that.

S: "A ruin??" Winston starts to get excited about the possibility of that too
"Thblat wobluld be pretty cool!"

L: "Leblt's keblep gobling, iblt cabln't ble fablr!" Garry hops off the bottom to start swimming again.

S: "Right behblind ya!" Winston jumps off the bottom as well and swims after Garry, hoping there's actaully a ruin nearby here

L: As they continue, the bricks get more common... And sure enough, there's a ruin up ahead! "Swbleet! Ibl beblt thblerebl's albl kiblnds oblf coblol stbluff ibln thblere!"

S: "Oh awblesome! Leblts check it out!" by now, Winston's red blush is enough to be visible to Garry, letting out a few bubbles from his nose

L: Garry starts to swim in, but notices Winston's blush. "Oblh, dblo yoblu nebled aiblr? Ibl cabln giblve yoblu soblme reblal qublick."

S: "Yes thanblk you, I do not feel liblke pushing myself toblday, that's for sublre..." Winston giggles a bit at that

L: Garry nods, and blows out a large bubble. He holds it with his hands and passes it to Winston.

S: Winston takes the bubble and inhales it, his face returning to normal
"Ahhh, much bebltter...now let's geblt going inside that ruin!"

L: With a smile, Garry swims into the ruin with Winston, excitedly looking all over.

S: Winston looks around all over the ruin as well, wondering what could be hidden here
"In all the times I've beblen underwater, ivble never been insblide a rublin before, this is eblxciting!"

L: "Neblithbler hblave Ibl! Ibl'm sblo glblad Ibl cabln hblold mbly brbleatblh sblo loblng!"

S: "Sablme here! Hehe!"
Winston and Garry continue to swim through the ruin together, until they spot something...a special necklace which Winston takes and holds in his hands
"Check oublt this necklace! Seembls special!"

L: "Itbl's deblfinblitebly goblnna ble woblrth abl loblt, Ibl cabln sably thblat foblr sublre! Hblelp yoblursblelf, yoblu sablw iblt fiblrst."

S: "Niblce! Lemme trbly it on" Winston then puts on the necklace, smiling and wagging his tail
"What do you thblink?"

L: "Lobloks goblod obln yoblu! Coblme obln, leblt's keblep loblokiblng, Ibl beblt thblerebl's moblre coblol stbluff hblere!"

S: "Alblright thblen!" Winston the follows Garry through the ruins to find anything else cool, unaware of the necklace's hidden powers

L: As they both search, eventually the fish from earlier happens to come by! And, surprisingly... "Oh hey, it's those two again... Cool, I was sort of worried I wouldn't see them again." It talks! Yet, Garry doesn't react other than to point out that the fish is there.

S: Winston's eyes go wide as he hears the fish talk!
"Whbloa Whoa Whoa! I thblink I just heard thble fiblsh from before talk!"

L: Garry: "...Whblat? Itbl's noblt tablkinblg, itbl's abl fiblsh..."

The fish is clearly surprised as well, swimming up to Winston. "Hang on... Can you actually hear me this time?"

S: "No I'm seblrious!" Winston looks at the fish again and nods
"Ybles! I can heblar yblou!!"

L: Garry: "Iblt mublst ble soblmetblhinblg ablout thblat neblcklblace..."

Fish: "Now that I get a good look at it... Yeah, your friend's right, that's a magic necklace that the people who used to live here made!"

S: "Hublh?" Winston looks at his necklace he's wearing, his face a little red again
"Unbelievable... so I guess this magic necklblace must enblable me to talk to you!"

L: Garry: "Thblat's sblo coblol, Ibl wiblsh Ibl hblad onble toblo!"

Fish: "There's a decent chance this isn't the only magic thing around here, but I haven't seen a whole lot of this place. Being here feels weird..."

S: "Hmm... wble haven't been hblere long either, yblou should come along wiblth us then!"

L: Fish: "Alright, sure! I'll do what I can to help you guys explore here."

Garry: "Ibl'd deblfinblitebly ble fiblne wiblth thblem coblminblg alblong!"

S: "Well thbley are coming! Alblright!" Winston happily gives the fish a big hug

L: The fish hugs Winston back.

Garry: "Niblce, Ibl reblallbly liblke thblem!"

S: "Peblrfect! Let's go then!" as Winston's face turns visibly red again, he starts to swim forward to try and find something else magical in here

L: Garry: "Nebled moblre aiblr, Wiblnstblon?"

Fish: "Right, you guys are from the surface, you can't breathe down here..."

S: "Uhh... I'm oblk foblr now... I'll leblt you knoblw when I nebled some moblre"

L: Garry: "Alblrigblht. Hblope wble fiblnd soblme wably tblo brbleatblhe ibln hblere..." He has a barely visible blush.

Fish: "Don't push yourselves too far..."

S: "Trublst me, I'm not planninblg on thblat..." Winston giggles as the group swims deeper through the ruins

L: Everyone searches around for anything else like the necklace, or any possible source of air as well...

S: as they keep going, there's a long hallway above them, which could potentially reach an air pocket

L: The fish looks up at it. "Oh, there might be air up there!"

Garry of course doesn't hear that, but happens to notice the hall anyway. "Hbley, thblat miblght hblave abln aiblr poblckeblt!"

S: "Good eblye! Let's sblee!" Winston then starts to head up the long hallway above them, hoping to find some air at the end of it

L: Garry and the fish quickly follow, and sure enough, there's some air up above! Just not a whole lot, barely enough for Garry and Winston to breathe at the same time.

S: Winston gasps in the air once they get there
"Phew! There's barely enough room up here! But air is air!"

L: Garry surfaces with a gasp, the fish deciding to stay below for now. "I should be able to make this bigger, hang on." He starts exhaling, and his breath adds a fair bit of room before he stops. "That's better!"

S: "There we go! Perfect! Much better" Winston smiles and wags his tail
"I know this is a casual dive for me, but I'm having a pretty good time! My friends don't know what they are missing!"

L: Garry: "Yeah, this is great! I bet showing your friends that necklace would convince them to join you sometime!"

S: "It's possible, if they know there's expensive and magic stuff underwater then maybe I'll be enough to convince them...hehe... I've been trying to convince at least one of my friends to come down here for years, and yeah I've been unsuccessful"

L: "Then we'd better find more stuff to prove there's still a reason for them to come down here, huh?"

S: "Definitely... cause I don't think a necklace is gonna be enough here if I'm honest with ya, they are probably gonna think I bought this or something"

L: The fish pokes their head above the water, holding their breath with puffed cheeks of their own as they check on the two. Garry laughs at the sight of that.

S: when Winston sees that too he couldn't help but laugh at it a bit too
"Ok, I have never seen a fish hold their breath before, that's kinda funny I won't lie!"

L: Garry: "It is, yeah! And pretty cute too!"

The fish smiles at both of them.

S: "Oh its super cute! I love this! I know they probably won't be able to hold it for very long, but just seeing that made my day" Winston hugs the fish, even giving their puffy cheeks a little rub as well

L: The fish hugs him back, though they're already starting to blush.

Garry: "Might want to be quick, doesn't seem like they're good at holding their breath."

S: "Yikes! Yeah looks like I was right about that, don't worry little fish we are already done here" Winston quickly takes a couple of deep breathes before holding his breath and diving underwater with the fish still in their hands

L: Garry starts sucking in all the air as Winston dives under.

The fish exhales once they're underwater again. "Phew... Don't worry too much, I can handle a minute or so."

All the air of the pocket disappears into Garry before he swims down to the two, giving a thumbs-up.

S: Winston gives a thumbs up back
"Yeah wblell, I wasn't aboblut to watblch yblou push yourself, heh... anyone I'm frienblnds with I'm sublper protblective of them"

L: Fish: "That's definitely nice to hear! I'll do what I can to keep you guys safe too."

Garry: "Reblady tbo keblep gobling?"

S: "Thanks little fiblsh! And yeablh I'm ready to keep gbloing! Leblts see what else we can fiblnd!"

L: Garry: "Thblerebl's goblt tblo ble soblmetblhinblg elblse arbounbld hblere..."

Fish: "There should be, yeah..." Everyone resumes exploring.

S: they continue to explore around, and eventually they find a couple of Gems randomly scattered around the place

"Hey look!"

L: Garry: "Niblce! Noblw webl're prblettbly mublch seblt tblo coblnviblnce yoblur frblienblds, hbluh?"

Fish: "These ARE really nice, they're so shiny!"

S: "Thatbls perblfect! Let's take theblse gems and find our way bacblk out so I can show evbleryone them!"

Winston starts to collect some of the gems that are scattered around

L: The fish picks up one of the gems, that being all they can carry, while Garry scoops up a few of them.

Garry: "Alblrigblht, leblt's hblead oublt!"

S: Winston's smile widens as he carries all of the gems in his arms

"Yep, let's gblet outta here!" he then begins to swim for the exit

L: Garry and the fish swim with Winston, happy to have found all the gems they did.

S: as they all continue to swim, eventually they exit the ruin and back into the cave, they were pretty deep in them as Winston's face turns red once again, but he ignores it and continues to swim forward

L: Fish: "Good to be out of there... Don't like the vibe of that ruin for whatever reason."

Garry: "Shbloulbldn't ble loblng unbltil webl're oubltsiblde agblain..."

S: "Thanblk arceus..."

pretty soon, the trio makes it back outside the caves! Although they are still pretty deep underwater and Winston's face turns visibly red once again

L: Garry: "Okblay, alblmosblt thblere... Wablnt moblre aiblr, Wiblnstblon?"

S: "I'm ok, I jublst wanna make thble push to the end, let's just keblep going"

L: Garry: "Alblrigblht, iblf yoblu're sublre."

The fish keeps watching Winston to make sure they'll be okay.

S: they then start to make the swim back up to the distant surface, Winston hoping he'll make it back up ok which seems likely

L: Without too much more effort, Garry and Winston surface, the fish staying just below the surface again.

Garry starts exhaling all the air he'd been holding in. "That was a lot of fun!"

S: Winston gasps in the air
"It sure was! And we got so many gems! My friends are definitely gonna be jealous now! Although I definitely won't be selling this necklace here, I'm keeping this so I can continuing talking to that fish!"

L: Garry: "Yeah, I'd definitely want to keep that one too!"

The fish pokes their head up and tries their best to gesture that the necklace will let Winston talk with anything aquatic, not just them.

S: not entirely understanding what the fish said, Winston took a quick breath and dove back under just so he could hear what the fish actually said

"What did you sblay?"

L: The fish goes back under to talk. "That necklace should let you talk to any aquatic animal, not just me. I bet you're gonna have a lot of fun with it!"

S: "Wait are you seblruous?! Thblats awesome!! Yeblah that'll be really fun! As much as I doblnt wanna leave yblou...I gobltta get going... I wiblsh there was a way we cobluld stay in contacblt..."

L: Fish: "Same here... I generally stay around this area though, if you come by here again you'll probably find me. Really looking forward to seeing you again..." The fish does their best to hug Winston while still holding the gem.

S: "Me tbloo... I'm really stblarting to like yblou as a budbldy..." Winston manages to hug the fish back

L: Fish: "I bet you're gonna end up pretty popular in the ocean, at least! Oh, and don't forget this gem. I like it, but I think you guys have better use for it." They give Winston their gem.

S: "Thblanks little gbluy... well gbluess I'll be seebling you latbler..." Winston frowns before tightly hugging the fish one more time, clearly sad that he has to leave them behind

L: "Bye, um... Winston, I think." They hug Winston back, sad as well.

S: "Mmhm..." after 2 minutes straight of hugging, Winston pulls away...waving goodbye to the fish one more time before going back to the surface, calmly gasping for air

L: The fish waves back, and swims off.

Garry: "Had to say goodbye to your fish friend for now, huh? You okay?"

S: "Y-yeah, I'm fine... gonna miss them, but I'll be ok... he did say that this necklace actaully let's you talk to any aquatic creature which was pretty cool"

L: Garry: "That IS cool! That's gonna let you have a lot of fun in the ocean from now on!"

S: "Sure is! But anyways, let's get these gems to shore so we can make sure they are nice and safe"

L: "Yep, definitely don't want to lose these!" The two swim back to shore, already thinking about what to do with all the money they'll be getting from the gems.

S: Winston thinks that way too, and eventually they get back to shore
"Cant wait to get these sold! My friends are not gonna believe where I got the money from! Thanks a lot for being my dive buddy Garry, I hope we have a chance to dive together again soon!"

L: "Same here! This was a lot of fun, and I bet we'll have a great time next time we meet too!"

S: "Most definitely! Well, I guess I'll see you around then! Take care of yourself ok?" Winston smiles and gives Garry a little side hug

L: "Same with you! See you again sometime!" Garry hugs Winston back, then heads off to sell all the gems he's holding onto.

S: "Bye bye!" Winston smiles as he too heads off to sell the gems as well, happy to make his causal dive a lot more fun then it would have normally
