It's Ellie's first day at playgroup as a three-year-old cub, and she's actually quite a shy badger really so is hugging her dad's leg as they stand at the doorway. As she looks around the room, she sees a little squirrel playing with a toy. The squirrel looks friendly, and the toy she's playing with looks interesting. She still holds onto her dad's leg, although deep down she knows she'll be okay on her own, and her brother is here too, already playing with the diggers in the sandpit with some of the other boys.

Her dad looks down at her kindly. "You'll be okay Ellie," he says, "and I'll be right outside if you need me." She looks up at him. She trusts him completely. She releases her grip on his leg, and watches as he steps away, back through the door. She's made a decision: the squirrel will be her friend. Ellie approaches the bundle of red fluff.

"Hello," she says in a quiet voice, shy yet confident. "My name's Ellie. What's yours?"

"Rachel," says the squirrel. She holds the toy up. "Do you want to play?"
