This is Luna from the animated PBS Kids series 'Let's Go Luna!' (LGL).
I've referenced LGL before, in the form of my 'QUICKIE: Drawing Leo (a rant)' submission. That stupid upload presently has 4k views on DA, so the series has its fans, I guess.
But that's not the reason I drew Luna today---goodness no! I mean, my last two uploads were of wolf characters, in need on a moon (because wolves) ...Luna will suffice as a moon for them (at least for now) ...that and Luna is easy to draw. ^^
Yeah, I've not been in much of an art mood lately (a couple watchers have noticed, and inquired---I'm fine, just not feeling like drawing).
The card was drawn beginning to end with a Mitsu-Bishi Hi-Uni pencil. :3
...Pencil.
The featured pencil is VERY interesting. Though it seems to be made by Staedtler, it's actually a derivative---a possible product of *Hirohachi Akagi and Co., made sometime before WWII.
*Hirohachi Akagi and Co. would be renamed to 'Colleen Pencil Co., Ltd' in 1947 (Colleen was a maker of very high quality pencils). It's been verified (see sources) that Hirohachi Akagi and Co. made imitation and derivative 'Castell' pencils, pre-WWII. The 'Moon Glove' pencil also seems linked to Hirohachi Akagi and Co., albeit more loosely, in blog posts.
Before WWII, imitations and rip-offs of well-known American and German pencils were commonplace in Japan.
This 'Moon Glove' pencil is such a specimen. :3
This pencil was made sometime in the 1920s, and is based on the 'Moon Globe' pencil from Staedtler.
It's debatable whether the 'Glove' on my pencil (in place of 'Globe') was a misspelling or written intentionally ...but my guess would be the latter, done as a way of dodging a possible trademark infraction.
Again, I'm not 100% this derivative pencil was made by Hirohachi Akagi and Co., but it IS an imitation/rip-off. Even so, this 100-year-old pencil isn't worthless---there are collectors who have a fondness for these. :3
*sighs happily as the pencil is back!* That's an interesting back story. Is there a market for mistyped pencils like there are for misstamped coins cause typos like that would make it worth much more that it's original collector value. Also it's another lefty fo which I approve. :D
I'm also glad you're drawing and sharing again as I've missed your drawings, your pencils and especially your stories / info to go with them. I always just used pencils to write and draw and never guessed there was such a collector's market to them or such a diverse selection!
