A cold night
Drawing from 2022, revised in 2024!!

Evelyn's carefree days had come to an end. Her beloved grandfather Theodore had passed away after a long battle with cancer. The young girl was plunged into a deep depression and could barely eat without vomiting. She had to take a leave of absence from school for a few days as she couldn't focus on her studies or homework.

As time went by, Evelyn was able to keep down more of what she ate, but it still wasn't enough. Despite this, it was necessary for her to return to school as she was at risk of repeating the grade. However, even though she had returned to school, her grades had significantly dropped. Her teachers noticed this, and despite understanding her situation, they insisted on speaking with her mother or grandmother to see if they could find a solution to her academic decline. This added more stress to Evelyn as she feared her teachers would contact her mother, Abby. But her grandmother, Sile, was also going through a tough time as she had lost her husband, the person with whom she had built her life. Evelyn did not want to cause her grandmother any more problems, so she tried her best to improve her academic performance, which left her mentally exhausted.

One day, when her studies seemed to be improving, she had a physical education class. It was a particularly hot day, but nothing out of the ordinary. Evelyn had to participate in the Cooper test; she had to run for 12 minutes at a steady pace alongside her classmates on the school's track.

It was then when it happened. Evelyn had not been eating properly for a long time and was mentally exhausted due to the great effort she was making to improve her academic results. But that day, she failed. Everything went black; she had barely completed 2 laps of the track when the young girl fainted.

Her teachers acted quickly to save the girl. In a few minutes, an ambulance had arrived to provide the necessary medical assistance. Shortly after, they called her grandmother to inform her that her granddaughter had been hospitalized.

Evelyn was very weak; she had severe anemia and had to be given fluids. When the girl woke up, she saw her grandmother by her side, who smiled slightly as she greeted her.

The girl couldn't help but look away; she felt very embarrassed for worrying her grandmother. She felt that all her efforts had been in vain and couldn't help but break down in tears.

—I'm so sorry for disappointing you —said the girl sadly.

—Evelyn, sweetie, you haven't disappointed me, but you must eat. I know this is a difficult situation, God knows. I already lost your grandfather, I don't want to lose you too. Please, promise me that you will take care of yourself and do what is necessary to improve your health —said her grandmother with tears in her eyes.

—I'll try.

That was the last thing the girl said before a doctor came to inform her she could go home in a few hours but should avoid exertion and eat more for a speedy recovery.

When this happened, Evelyn was about to turn 12 years old.

This touches a bit too close to home to me. Regardless, amazingly well done.

Very touching and emotional. It is hard to accept that life is about gains and loss, eventually it will be her turn after a few decade had past (let's hope).

This piece tears me up... but in a good way, a healing sort of way. This artwork you've created and shared with us stirs poignant memories in my own upbringing, having lost my own father to cancer, this scene looks incredibly outright familiar in a weird way... though I had my mom and sisters by my side, circumstances aren't as easy for others to cope alongside with. I am so truly grateful to Evelyn's grandparents for stepping up to the plate. My own grandma was also widowed, losing my grandpa early on in life... so this piece ALMOST strikes a direct chord with me, but not quite... still, the relevancy is so raw and aggressively bittersweet, I just adore and cherish Evelyn with all my heart and seeing her so defeated and run down, so disappointed... oh man, and the way Sile is nurturing her with motherly affection, despite the foul mood... oh gosh, you've gone and created a very moving and deeply affecting work of art! I almost couldn't find the words to properly convey my feelings.. I hope this will do. Thank you kindly, dear fellow artist. *big-ass shepcoon hugs* <3

QUICK EDIT: Before I forget because I can sometimes forget such things until later after a comment is shared but:
I LOVE the story you've written to accompany this piece so much, reading it really triggered so many emotions within me. It's a very heavy and emotionally compelling bit of storytelling but you've done a fine job in honoring the complexities of grief and loss within a tight-knit family unit. Bless you, Kerry-Sama!! <3 <3

Life can be so harsh, and I'm really sorry to hear about your father. I’ve also lost loved ones, and I know how incredibly painful it is. It means a lot to me that this piece resonated with you, even though it's a sad one. I’m so glad you liked it, and your words truly mean the world to me. Thank you for sharing your feelings and for your kind support. big hugs ;_;
