Desert Cottontail (Sylvilagus audubonii)

9 months old
Character Description
Silpfeffaroo is a grayish-brown Desert Cottontail rabbit with streaks of white fur on his tail, rump, and around his eyes. He has three scratches on his left-hind hip that was given to him by a cat a couple of months earlier
Personality
Silpfeffaroo is a playful, young rabbit. At 9 months old, a rabbit isn't quite an adult yet but is pretty close. Regardless of this, Silpfeffaroo, due to his encounter with the house cat of the humans that owned him, has become disciplined and hard-working. In the wild, he joined a group of rabbits and received acceptance into their owsla because of the day and night difference between his usually playful disposition off duty to a much more determined and focused one, making him a promising young Runner.

Background/History
Silpfeffaroo was born "Kitbit" since he was the smallest rabbit kit of the litter. Though he was the smallest, he grew up the fastest. At a month old, he was already very playful; at two months old, he was rambunctious.
Kitbit's mother, Rosemary, had been owned by a family of humans for about 4 years now, having been born under another couple of rabbits the humans had owned before. Rosemary had grown used to the caged life. Her parents, however, less so, calling their cage a "hutch" from prior knowledge inherited from previous generations of rabbits, and using terms known to rabbits in their native tongue "Lapine." Rosemary was complacent, knowing full well that there was not anything she could do about living in captivity. She did not mind it, even. The humans treated the rabbits well. They were kept in a rather large cage, one big enough for a molly (mother rabbit) and a litter of rabbits to run around spaciously in. The cage was atop a base in the living room and provided a nice view of the outside through a window on a nearby wall. This was enough nature for Rosemary. Not for Kitbit however. At two months old, Kitbit found that the humans had a cat named Momo who they would let explore outside through the cat door. One day, when the humans were deep cleaning their cage, they let the rabbits wander the house while they cleaned it and he made his way to the cat door installed in the backdoor.
Kitbit exited the cat door and could smell the scent of the wild rabbits in the wind. Having such a young nose, his sense of smell was not as powerful as that of an adult rabbit's and therefore could not smell the mysterious cat downwind who was interacting with Momo, but the cat could smell him. Momo knew better than to attack the rabbits, but this stray cat did not. He smelled the scent of a young rabbit and caught sight of Kitbit, quickly initiating attack position and prepared to pounce on him. Momo, who was flirting with this male cat knowing she couldn't get pregnant by him wondered what it was he was reacting to and turned to see Kitbit unaware that he was being targeted. With a loud yowl, Momo alerted Kitbit who turned to look at where that came from. He looked at Momo then the male cat, unsure what was happening still. Never having interacted directly before, Momo know that all animals could understand some amount of universal communication and simply shouted "RUN!" With that, the tomcat pounced and Kitbit turned to run, not realizing the ground beneath him was loose dirt, taking him a few seconds to gear up his sprint. The tomcat reached him just as he took off, swiping with his left paw and scratching him, but Kitbit took off just in time, narrowly escaping. He ran out away from the yard, through the chain-link fence, and into the nearby fields in the direction where he smelled the rabbits coming from. Momo did not know where he was running off to but know she did not want to let the tomcat get him; she quickly ran up behind the tomcat and pounced him, drawing his attention away from Kitbit and eventually scaring him off in the opposite direction. With a final hiss, she ensured he would not pursue him.
When Kitbit finally met up with the wild rabbits, he told them his story. They accepted Kitbit into their warren and introduced him to the rest of their colony. One of the rabbits suggested a nickname for Kitbit in regards to the events that led him to freedom and called him "Silpfeffaroo". These rabbits were more fluent in Lapine and explained that it is common to portmanteau various Lapine words to create new ones. They explained this name comes from "silf", meaning "outdoors", "pfeffa", meaning "cat", and "-roo", a common suffix in Lapine meaning "little". Put together as "Silpfeffaroo", his name would translate to "Little Outdoors Cat". Kitbit liked this name and took it as his main name, being called Kitbit only on occasion as his new nickname.

Short Description:

Silpfeffaroo is an ex-hutch rabbit. He ran away at a young age to be free among the local wild rabbits, narrowly escaping an encounter with a local stray pfeffa -- "cat" in the fictional rabbit language Lapine -- and saved by the family's cat, leaving a nasty scar on his hind-left hip.

Full Backstory (didn't fit in the appropriate section)

Born to his mother Rosemary, Silpfeffaroo was known as Kitbit since he was the smallest kit of the litter. Though he was the smallest, he grew up the fastest. At a month old, he was already very playful; at a couple months old, he became rambunctious.
At two months old, Kitbit was a rambunctious rabbit, sprinting around the cage and playing with his siblings quite intensely. Though the cage was pretty big, the floor space was cut down a bit as the humans had a plastic box in the corner where they could poop, (in the Lapine language, "pass hraka"). The thing with having an entire litter of rabbit kits in one cage, however, the hraka often became too much to where they would pass hraka on the cage floor. In order to clean the cage when this happened, the humans would remove the rabbits from the cage and allow them to run freely around the house while they cleaned the cage. One day, when this was happening, Kitbit met the family's cat ("pfeffa" in Lapine.) The rabbit kit did not know the family had a cat for a couple of months now as she was a calm one who enjoyed the spoiled life and knew that as long as she did not mess with the rabbits, the humans would be happy.
The humans had a cat door installed in the back door for their cat, Momo. She would roam freely outside and come back when she was tired or too cold/hot or if it was time to eat, and she was spayed so the family did not need to worry about that when she was out. The local strays did not know that, however. Kitbit watched one day as Momo exited through the cat door and wondered what was on the other side. He followed her and peeked through it feeling the cool breeze of the wind and inhaling the smell of fresh air. The human that was cleaning out the cage that day came back to see that the rabbit kit seemed to almost accidentally find his way outside and quickly picked him up, startling him a bit as he tried to fight his way out of the human's grasp before being placed back in the cage. But it was too late. The little rabbit had already tasted fresh air and wanted to feel it again.
It would be another month before the rabbits' cage got to the state it was before and the humans had to take all the rabbits out and wash the cage. This was the time. Kitbit made straight for the cat door, making sure he did not make too much noise on his way alerting the humans. He peeked through the flap and inhaled the fresh air once again. Today, however, the air was mixed with what smelled like other rabbits but he did not recognize them. Were there rabbits living in the wild? He didn't want to live in this tiny cage all his life when there was a much bigger world outside. He yearned for the "silf" life, "silf" meaning "outdoors" in Lapine. Rosemary, who had followed behind him to see where he was going, did not care for silf and was content with the life she had, but the look on the little kit's face and the way he ran around in the cage and tormented his siblings, like his brother, Timothy, she knew from tales that this kit had too much of El-ahrairah in him and was made for a silf life. Kitbit turned to nuzzle Rosemary once more, telling his mother goodbye, before turning back to the cat door and leaving the house, not knowing that he would run into Momo outside.
Kitbit exited the cat door and could smell the scent of the wild rabbits in the wind. Having such a young nose, his sense of smell was not as powerful as that of an adult rabbit's and therefore could not smell the mysterious cat downwind who was interacting with Momo, but the cat could smell him.
