I use to wonder how a ship made of wood can sink, being that wood itself floats.
However, I got to thinking...Being that those ships had such tall sail masts, they would need to have a lot of heavy ballast in the hull to prevent the wind from tipping them over. I learned that from making model sail boats, then to experience the occasional disappointment of watching the wind capsize a few of them. I believe it must be the ballast that pulls those ships to the bottom when they take on enough water to sink them.
