What it says on the tin. :3

The ferrule is the part the eraser attaches to. Most ferrules are made of metal or aluminum. WWII ferrules are made of plastic or cardboard/paper (metals were rationed during the war).

The 'eraser end' of a pencil is its 'tip', whether it has an eraser or not.

The writing end is called the 'point', whether sharpened or not.

The exposed wood caused by sharpening is called the 'collar'.

The 'core' is the lead as seen from the pencil's unsharpened point/tip.

I'm embarrassed to say this, but I'm this day old when I finally learned what all those markings on a pencil meant. I mean, I knew that most pencils for school needed to be a No. 2 but really didn't know what that meant.

Thanks for the lesson. Couldn't have learned it from a better person... someone who uses them all the time lol.

When you get into artists pencils you have a variety of leads available, I certainly lean towards silky smooth extra soft pencils when sketching since it requires less pressure meaning marks are easier to erase.

Now you see how 'different strokes for different folks' can apply to pencils. ;3

Most pencils are 2s, but there are 1,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12 pencils as well, going in both directions (soft to hard). There are also fractions, like a 2-1/2 pencil. I have a rare Venus that doesn't have a hardness value, but is simply described as 'Special'. I've no idea what it does (mine isn't sharpened)---even its model number suggests something's off.

I've always loved the fact that they give you so little eraser for such a large amount of lead, like they (the manufactures) think you're not gonna make MANY mistakes writing / drawing! :)

With artist pencils, the idea is you'd want to use a specialized eraser. I myself use cap erasers, because their tops are narrow (ACO is a small format).
Moreover, most of my pencils are 50+ years old; their erasers long since ceased to be useful ^_^
