I know most of my watchers aren't aviation people, so Chucky's communications might look weird.

In the aviation world, air traffic control will address an aircraft by its call sign(Newtek 79 in Chucky's case), followed by instructions. The pilot will then repeat those exact instructions, followed by their call sign again. So there's a lot of repeating things back and forth to make sure nothing is missed or misunderstood.

In panel 8, where Chucky is turning toward the runway, just above the airplane you can see the college.

Loving the detail of the comunication 'voice' coming from both auricular sets...~ small detail, but neat! ^^
Chucky
11 years, 10 months ago
That's a detail I can't leave out, we have to know that Chucky and Ian are hearing the same thing.

Aviation does rock, and I find it pretty cool that you include such a level of detail for the aircraft and systems. I'm familiar with some of the jargon, but the frame I worked didn't have the regular flight control surfaces, and it was mostly fly by wire. Still cool to know what's happening in each panel.

Thanks! I'm glad the technical part is appealing to so many people, and even better if you understand it.

Heheh, so much technical talk and happenings here.  All the better for accuracy, I see.

I ever tell you that you've a great comic that I enjoy reading?  Each page is awesome, and I always smile when you update.

^_^

Thanks for the smiles!

Any landing you don't go skidding off the runway into a fuel truck and explode
taking out the entire airport is a good one. ;D  Can't wait to see Chucky behind the
stick of one of the jets. He probably can't either. :D
Chucky
11 years, 10 months ago
That's a good way to put it. He'd love to get in a jet, but he'd probably be very intimidated if he were actually put in one.
KNIFE

Give him time. I have a feeling before long he'll be soloing
and showing the others how it's done. ;D

"The hospital? What is it?"

"It's a big building with patients... but that's not important now."

Leslie Nielsen created a whole new career for himself out of that performance.

I honestly think it was his BEST performance ever. He had some good lines in Naked Gun and Police Squad, but Airplane was my favorite role for him.

i have to say that i am glad i stumbled into you comic. it kinda forced me to read it from the beginning cause it was so neat.

i also have to say that i really like all the little details that you go into with it. it allows someone like me who knows nothing about aviation to learn a few things and still have a clue a to what is going on. i also have to admit it has made me a bit more curious about it in general.

another thing i like about the comic is the characters. you have made so many extremely unique characters and have been very consistent  with their personalities. To often I have seen others homogenize all but a few characters which makes it feel weird. Your characters feel real because they are so different.

In short, I love the work you have done. I look forward to seeing more.

The only thing that looks strange to me is when the picture shows the characters straight on. Kinda like the second panel from the top on the right. The one talking about chucky's radio work being good. Maybe it is just me though.
Chucky
11 years, 10 months ago
Thanks! I'm glad you've taken such a liking to it. Most of my characters are loosely based off people I've known at one time or another, so that helps in writing them. I also make sure to go back through the comic and make sure I'm being consistent with them.

Drawing forward facing characters can be little tricky. They look okay to me, but then we all see things a little differently.

Most of my aviation knowledge comes from the Pilotwings video games. :P

Lot of fun, but Chucky has the same problem I do: Landing. XD
Chucky
11 years, 10 months ago
I'd think landing a video game would be pretty hard, only visual cues and no depth perception.
isthisagoodname
11 years, 10 months ago
Well, the latest game in the series is on the 3DS, giving you SOME sense of depth. I feel the 3D abilities only hinder me though, so I tend to turn them off. XD
Chucky
11 years, 10 months ago
Unless that 3-D is all around you, I can imagine it being more distracting.

Any landing you can walk away from is a good one.  Any landing you can walk away from and fly the plane again later is a better one.

Irolan

Just curious, what does this "information lima" thing mean? When I try to google it, all I find is information about Lima, the capital city of Peru.
Chucky
11 years, 10 months ago
In aviation, like the military, all letters A through Z have have a word attached to them so there is no confusion between letters like 'M' and 'N' or 'F' and 'S' when heard over the radio. 'Lima' happens to be the word attached to the letter 'L'.

When an airport's tower opens in the morning, it will announce the information as 'A' or 'Alpha'. Every hour(sometimes more frequently) it updates the weather and assigns the next letter in the sequence. Chucky and Ian are arriving in mid afternoon to information 'L' or 'Lima'. I think all these letters were chosen back in WWII when radio use develped.

Oh, here you go. Here's the explaination of it. I should probably read this too.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NATO_phonetic_alphabet
Irolan
11 years, 10 months ago
Yeah, I know about the phonetic alphabet, although they use different ones in German. So if I understand you correctly, the letter is basically an indication of the current time and weather situation.
Is that always the same (same letter for same time each day with different information attached to it) or does the letter change according to the situation (like, 5PM may have information Lima one day and information Zulu on the next, depending on the weather)?
Chucky
11 years, 10 months ago
Yes, that is correct. The letter will not be for the same time each day, like you said. If there is enough of a change in the weather, new information will be issued for that time. If it's changing drastic enough, the phonetic information could even change a number of times within one hour. I hope that all makes sense.
Irolan
11 years, 10 months ago
It does. Thanks for the explanation. =^,.,^=

wow.. man me and my slow brain. I know 'lima' is a form of aviation code, like saying rodger, or 10-4, it's also an acronym for something but for the life of me cant recall. Heh Loving yur comic so far

Thanks! I think 10-4 is more reseved for use on citizens band(CB) radio.
