Orange Shirt day commemorates the struggles of the world's indigenous peoples in the face of re-education camps everywhere, but particularly in Canada (the name “Canada” likely comes from the Huron-Iroquois word “kanata,” meaning “village” or “settlement.”). Orange Shirts are worn to remember the experience of Phyllis (Jack) Webstad, who had an orange shirt that her grandmother bought her taken away from her on her first day of residential schooling when she was six-years-old. Idle No More is an organization that represents and campaigns in favor of the sovereign rights of indigenous communities worldwide. You can visit their website at https://idlenomore.ca/
I would also like to share Steven Hassan's wonderful interview with Cindy Blackstock, in which they discuss decolonizing our social mindsets and laws. You can find that interview at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBN8vE3x768. She also discusses the Orange Shirt day project as well as many other fascinating, revealing subjects. Pilamaya to them both!
