Walden was born a male lion cub, with dirt-brown fur, light-brown mane and green eyes. He was born in the eastern reaches of Africa, but wasn't named by his parents. Walden lived in a field that was along the coast, with his parents and lion pride. He was happy, but the pride had trouble getting food because of the local hyena herds.

Because of the lack of food, the pride chose to move elsewhere, but Walden and his parents stayed behind. Walden managed to survive on what food his parents could find, but because they had nothing for themselves, they eventually died from starvation. Walden felt sad, for he had no family or pride to take care of him.

One day, Walden became nervous when he saw a ship off the coast and humans landed along the beach. One of the humans spotted Walden, managed to grab him and stuff him in a bag. Walden was then tossed in a cage and taken to the ship. After what seemed liked a long journey, Walden was taken off the ship and taken onto a dock and he saw a huge city. Walden had been taken to Paris, France.

The next day, Walden, along with other trinkets was put up for sale. Walden became scared as he saw the humans looking around and at him, but then was approached by a man wearing a beige two-piece suit with a double-breasted jacket. The seller referred to the well-dressed man as 'ambassador'. After buying Walden, the cub was taken to a large mansion and the man gave the cub to a young girl.

Walden was very scared at first, but the young girl spoke with a kind voice as she took him to the backyard and Walden saw many other animals roaming freely. Walden approached a zebra, who explained where he was and that the man taking care of them was the ambassador to France and owned an animal sanctuary. Walden was then approached by the young girl, who gave him his name.

Walden rather liked the name the girl named him. Walden played with her and the animals all the time. She even gave him a collar with a gold tag that was engraved with his name. Walden was so happy, but missed his parents and the beach. Living in Paris was all new to him, but Walden was going to get use to it.
