Figured I'd post this one, just 'cause I enjoyed drawing all that sorbet hair. :D

The answer that went on the blog with this picture:

"It’s almost a trick question. Sure, it’s easy to get caught up in the potential conflicts between science and religion, but… it isn’t necessary.

Would you call a plumber to fix your computer? A mechanic to cater your wedding? ‘Psychologist’ and ‘priest’ are different job descriptions for a very good reason- either one assumes their particular field is the reason for your visit. If you came to a priest with your life problems, they would try to solve those problems with faith. Likewise, if you come to me with the idea that you’re being attacked by entities beyond this realm… well, I can’t really do anything about that, so I’ll assume your subconscious lead you to me instead because those hostile entities are actually emotional problems- either issues that you’re dealing with currently and trying to submerge within an immaterial realm to give them meaning or attack them on turf you know well… or deeper issues from the past come to realize themselves as specters within your consciousness.

I’m not saying that this is the only explanation, or that it couldn’t be those less explainable phenomenon. I just wouldn’t know even if they were! It’s not really my realm, and your computer definitely needs new pipes."

The only time it becomes a problem is when scientific knowledge encroaches on areas religion has always held to be "unknowable," and now that we're starting to know them they desperately cling to that fake "divine mystery" and their own special explanation, just because it's how it's always been. Damn Creationists.

It's a seductive notion, to be absolutely sure of something important. But that alone is enough to make its authenticity suspect.

not every religious person is closed minded

Of course not. I'm not claiming that all people in any given group, especially those as massive as religions, think in exactly the same way.

But religions as a whole tend to resist change, simply because of their nature. Individual believers and even individual leaders may be open-minded... but that tends to lead to schisms that end up creating entirely new sects, because the old "true believers" can't accept even their own when they're more accepting of new ideas than the religious norm.

And that's why I just follow my own personal beliefs with a Christian base, I stay away from most sects. I hate ones that tell people what they believe is wrong, belief is belief, not fact or fiction, therefore you are not right to tell someone they are wrong. =)

...What's Shamanism?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shamanism

It's Wikipedia, but this should be good enough for these purposes. If this doesn't help you I suggest heading to a local library.

Ahh, I am much relieved.  If M. Night Shylaman had started a cult, I'd be very distraught.

Many computers have pipes in their cooling systems and well as in memory :)
The idea of them springing a leak is just funny though and a plumber is just about needed for some of those >:)

"Most witches don't believe in gods. They know that the gods exist, of course. They even deal with them occasionally. But they don't believe in them. They know them too well. It would be like believing in the postman."

In all honesty (and yes, I believe in the existence of a spirit world, know some people who are into esoterics themselves), he needs both a psychologist and a shaman - some of the entities may be real and others delusions.

This is actually a really good way to answer this, truthfully I'm on a dual mind on the subject... I feel that science can explain what's happening on the level we're on and that magick is more than likely the 'science' of a whole other plane and/or planes of existence that we're not currently aware of.

From memory somebody said something along the lines of 'Magick is likely, simply the everyday phenomena of another plane being experienced in ours.'

Now don't get me wrong, I do feel that psychology is a very important practice and I am going to listen to a psychologist before I listen to a priest being that based on my personal experiences with the 'metaphysical' even -if- it is something not of this world that is attacking you it has to wear you down first and cause you to unravel before it can do any real damage...

As far as I can tell this is because everything is made up of energy and you're not going to go and punch a brick wall with your bare fist in an attempt to tear it down but if you pick at the grout in the right way for long enough the wall is going to collapse under it's own pressure.

On the flip side the problem in question could be and is more likely going to be psychological because again from my own experiences unless you're already sensitive to that kind of thing and call attention to yourself with it you're basically just going to get ignored because they have their own stuff to take care of without worrying about what we're doing.

Though most psychological conditions from my understanding have specific traits or symptoms that wouldn't synch up with alleged hauntings and other phenomena of that genre, I don't have any training in the way of psychology so I wouldn't be able to tell you and if anyone ever asked me about what I've experienced myself I'd preface it by saying that 'My path is not yours, I can tell you what I've seen and done but that doesn't make it true or right to anyone else but me as it is purely anecdotal and you may experience it differently to me.'

I respect you for taking the question seriously and for covering as many bases as you could while just being honest about it, the above is purely my views on it in comparison to your own and whether you decide to think over it or toss it away that's your call. :)

By the way, love the picture.

Possible alternate theory here: could he have meant 'entities' as a rather fanciful way of referring to people on the internet harassing him for his beliefs? That's just what popped into my mind.

Also, I liked the pic itself. Reminded me of when Linkara was reviewing a particularly terrible comic book in which Wonder Woman is reduced to prayer. "Why are you praying in a christian church!? You've MET your Gods!!!"

Call me crazy or what ever, my views of science and religion is as skewed as Einstein's.  But must exist to prove the other. Yes, I'm Roman Catholic.

I need to add to this, going along AlexReynard's line. Have anyone here read the Secret Wars and Beyonder Series in Marvel Comics? Its about a being who arrives to earth so powerful that many considered him to be a god. It reeked havoc with religion, including Nightcrawler's questioning of his after meeting the Beyonder in person! Science would have been able, if properly applied, figured out that the Beyonder was not a god but an alien from another universe. And like it is said and done, it was found out that the Beyonder was not a god.
