Show him playing with his pets. If you are going to have him as a tough bear, then show his gentle side with maybe a mouse or gerbil. If you have him as a small timid boy, then his pet could be a tough looking and strong rottweiler.

Why do lot of the male characters you draw have names that aren't exactly considered masculine? Is it just a coincidence?

Coincidence, I think.
Here, I actually -remember- a boy I saw in my mid-teens who was 4 and named Stacey. :3
This guy isn't modeled on him, though.~

In general, I just choose names based on how the character looks.
"Hmm, he -looks- like an Ashley. Consider it done!"
