Dam.   OO.

And it's a good thing that Mira is being held back, she might accidentally kill him.     Oo.

Kill him? Maybe. Knock the stupid out of him? Oh most certainly yes!

Is he stupid for having his family disown him over this b.s. she apparently knew about?

Predictable. Many adults aren't capable of open self-reflection, how should a child of x years be? Especially since his whole known world has just shattered due to a decision that he doesn't understand.

I can already feel the happy comments on FA being written right now, how Luna "deserved" it..
Poor Nigel and poor Luna.
Trying to help, but wanting others to take their own paths and free will in their own hands, makes her look like a jerk under certain light or in minds of selfcentered people.
Pretty much just like in real life..
Too bad, Nigel doesn't know what to do with his free will, nor he wants to accept that his whole life to this point was only to fuel his parents' ambition.

Not fuel his parents ambitions, Remember the last page? Nigel's Father was a guardian, and his father before that, and so on. This is a system Luna allowed to continue. Nigel is just unfortunately her putting a stop to it gently, Unless she approve of Nigel's brother.  But for her Soft ways, the only way to stop the system she's endorced for well over a hundred years would be to stop all of the new blood from nigel's family from becoming guardians.

We see how Other people around the families view becoming a guardian. This is something kids who are determined to have the chance, are endlessly trained for, raised for, bred for.

- Luna Needs to keep her guardians against chaos coming, but she cannot pretend that her own actions don't create problems.

Eh, I kinda agree and disagree with you.
We haven't seen anything pointing towards the assumption that Luna tries in any way BREAK the cycle of said tradition.
She's not approving of their ways, she tried to talk them out of it, but she never does anything that would take away someone's free will.
Luna tried to shine a light on Nigel's possible variety of ways to live, but he couldn't see them, blinded by his parents' teachings and the fact that he was disowned by them, after one failiure, she tries to confront him and tell him - there's other ways.
But, as I've said before - Nigel doesn't know how to live diffirently. He was raised to fuel his parents' ambitions. It was implied that his whole family generations were raised in pretty much same way, but before they were accepted as Guardians, found their own reasons to fulfill said duty, while Nigel just wants to please his Ma and Pa, to feel forewer loved and appreciated for being a Guardian.

As for Luna's actions, she told her companion in the begining of the story - "People think I'm naive." - well, I guess she could be called naive, if she only talks to everyone, leaving everything to others to decide and solve.
She wants people to hear her, to understand what she says, yet she never forces anyone into understanding, maintaining that "Free Will".
Does she makes mistakes?
Oh, most definitely. That makes her character more humane and alive to me.
RabbitHabbit
3 years, 3 months ago
True, but It also comes down to the issue that even though she projects an Air of Naivety, very clearly, and she intends for everything to work towards one big plan. It's ofcourse the selfish desire for the day-to-day person, who isn't immortal, to be concerned with themselves, and their offspring.

She did say in the last page she tried talking to them about it, but she made no appreciable efforts to change how that tribe thinks. Yet, she went out of her way to try to take the soft approach with the tristan. We Know she's doing the whole 'don't get directly involved bit'. But for being an effective Deity her words and actions fail to Resonate with those she speaks too. She's Not very Charismatic sure, and yes, her primary interraction with most cases is with children, and it's much MUCH harder to get children to see the big picture. I feel this is more though that adults are willing to suffer more than children are.

I can kind of See why they need a Force of effective warrior monks to battle the forces of chaos. If the gods are all 'wooo operate in mysterious ways wooo'. As opposed to like, DND, where if you piss an active god off enough they will smite your shit, and -must- be active, because they NEED worship to continue to be empowered as gods, and not just wither away into nascent entities.
It doesn't seem that in the tree of life the Gods need active worship, so they make little effort to make meaningful impact on the lives of many others.

We'll have to see how it all pans out.
Knowing how well Zummerg writes the stories, I bet Luna's actions will have some sort of outcome, for the better or worse.
I just like that Luna's a living character, with her own flaws and mistakes, despite being a long living creature with Life controlling powers.
She has her own view on how she should and should not interract with people and she sticks to her own believes, even if they're not practical in other people's eyes.
Again, she said so herself - people that worshiped her once, now either forgot about her, or think she's Naive.
And that speaks for itself.
She maybe a Deity with alot of wisdom on her side, but she's not ideal, nor allmighty or allseeing.

It's nice to sit and analyze the story from a point of a watcher, judging the actions of characters.
I often like to put myself in place of a character and understand, WHY they're doing what they're doing, instead of saying "They should've done this and that for better outcome!"
It's never a "better outcome", when things happening for real.

Yeeeeaaaahhhh.

The kid is not guardian material.

Look, flaws in fiction is nice and great and sugar and spice and rainbows but the ugly reality is you don't want people who are responsible with your safety and societal order to act like unhinge and entitled children.

This kid cracked, it is sad but the reality is what if he was in charge of protecting people and he folded faster than Clark Kent on laundry day because his parents disown him then, or say something or criticism his methods.

Sorry guys, but thinking he's an underdog and she is some kind of tin tyrant is nice and all, but it cannot be the case all the time.

Kid deserves it more than Mira. Mira was more or less raised by Luna and handed guardian ship.  While people who worship her drill and discard their kids should they fail to meet her requirements.

He's not acting Entitled, the system she's inspired has caused parents to discard their children should they fail to meet but one thing. One thing the kid couldn't have even had.

She's not a Tyrant, but she's too compassionate, she's blind to the suffering her actions cause. Nigel can't be the only child disowned for failing to meet her requirements. she isnpects tons of children frequently to see if they are worthy of being guardians yes? How many of them fail and become disowned by parents who simply start over with a new child. Why must she always specifically train children. This clearly fed into Nigel's parents notion that they need a -new- kid and not continue to train nigel. But that's clearly his parents failing.

Mira on the other hand, using powers learned from luna (the green glowing ki) jumped to attack Nigel on his criticism and rock throwing. Nigel IS right, but for the wrong reasons. He's right in the sense that her worship has lead to generations of children born to serve her as guardian, and nothing more, trained for nothing more, and failing that discarded by their parents.
Even if she claims 'she tried to talk to Nigel's Parents' Her statement to him is that "He lacked free will." Effectively, but, this didn't bother her in the slightest for ANY of Nigel's ancestors.

Nigel should buck fate and fight for the Side of Chaos. She sees great potential in him, so she sets him on a path for self destruction. Meanwhile she spoils Mira, while teaching Nigel 'the harsh lessons that he needs his own free will." Mira never needed to make that choice, she was always told, destined, and Assured that her mother would uplift her to guardian hood.

Maybe this is the time that The gods need to learn a lesson, that they shouldn't meddle in the affairs and lives of Mortals, if they only do so to improve their own stock.

- Those with great potential, may end up using their great potential for good, for great evil. And when those Encounter great Injustice, one will call their own revenge justice.

No.

You might had a point until you went "fight for chaos", which is like saying you will work with terrorist that burn down orphanages and raping nuns because you don't like how the justice system operates.

I would argue, but it seems you are so into the underdog angst makes might fantasy it would be lost.

Treating someone whose entire life just basically evaporated overnight for no reason of their own as "too weak" is exactly type of attitude the parents had.

It's demanding perfection. The kid had loving family, honest desire to succeed, guts to put in the effort. He tried. Luna saw that he was doing so out of parents desire, not his own, and asked him to try again next year. And look what happened, his family basically disowned him. Nothing makes sense to him.

Acting like child should be able to "handle" complete and total collapse of their life is just impossible request, many ADULTS can't handle it when their lifes go off rail.

Of course, blaming Luna also misses the mark. Luna could not have know that her simpyl asking him try again next year would lead to... this. She is not omniscient.
Nyrufa
3 years, 2 months ago
They disowned him for a single failure. Even though she outright told them he could try again next year, they cut him out of their lives because he didn't make the cut the first time. And judging by the shabby conditions of his outfit, it seems like he's been living on the streets for more than just a few days.

You would crack too, if you were raised from birth to pass this test, got rejected, and then kicked out on the streets to fend for yourself before you were old enough to hit puberty!

Well, this isn't a major surprise. Hopefully cooler heads can prevail in the end. Nigel needed to get that out of his system, but I really don't get what some people expect from Luna, as I don't think she can directly alter the mindset of those around her.

you can say what you want about who deserves what, but the kid started the fight. if Mira got away from Luna and ripped him a new one, he'd deserve it. cause Luna's wrong in the last panel, he may be a victim of circumstances but Nigel chose to throw the rock at a goddess. circumstances aren't your fault, but your actions are. play stupid games, win stupid prizes. I see his parents are the real misguided ones. Luna's just doing her job.
NeksusCat

Forget the "Goddess" part - he threw a rock at a person that wanted to reassure and enlighten him.
Maybe not in the best way she could, but she wanted to help him understand.
And he, not willing to take her kindness, feeling like she's alone guilty of all his problems, took the violent approach.
As much of a pity and care he deserves, that never may justify violence.

You're right, Nigel's parents were riding the wave of Pride and High Expectations, built up on the family's Tradition and constant access to the ranks of Guardians.
And it was they who failed to raise him properly.
Luna just told Nigel to ask himself, if being a Guardian, is actually what he wanted, instead of telling him, that he doesn't qualify at all.

Here's what I would've said if I were Luna:

"I'm afraid that you're aiming that rock at the wrong person.  I would've gladly accepted you.  I believed that you could be a great guardian.  You would be better qualified than all the others in that row put together.  *You just needed more time.*  One more yeah, you just needed one more year.  One more year to get over that last hurdle and find out that answer to what I asked you and you'd be in.  I assure you on that.

But you had Shit Parents!

You found out the hard way what I've been trying to beat into them since they were fawning over you. They didn't want you as a son.  You weren't a child to love and care for toward them.  You weren't a person to them.  You were just someone to keep on the family name and not be an embarrassment to them.  You discovered what they truly were the moment I said 'not yet.'  They're the ones who threw you out like garbage at the first sign of flaw, weakness, or disappointment.  They're the ones who would not forgive a single failing from you.  They're the ones who cast you out because you weren't what they wanted, and I don't blame you for tearing through their trinkets.  Not one god damned bit.

I happened to be there when your bastard father threw you out.  I made it perfectly clear that not just me, every celestial on the planet did not approve of what they did to you.  I also made it absolutely clear that Toby...remember Toby...Your parents just remembered Toby...I got in your dad's face and flat out told him that Toby will never...ever...become a guardian.  No amount of training, no amount of nurturing, her could drill everything into him in manners that would make Marine DI's blush, and I will flat out refuse him...and as I did so, I would tell him about you, and what they did to you, and I will make it clear to him why he would be refused."

I would then pause for a good seven seconds before turning to one side and go, "You can come out now, Toby."

Toby would've walked out from behind the tree where I hid him until this moment.  To show NIgel that they rejected Toby too...just as they ignored Toby when they were fawning over Nigel...just as Nigel himself was rejected.  "I could hear them humping on a bed trying to pump out another unit as I was consoling this young man.  I'll be rejecting that child as well."

"I assure you, Nigel.  Your parents will be hurt by this.  The time will come when all of their treasure is reduced to dust, their good name tarnished without recovery, and they will be dying alone with nobody to hold their hand.  And they will know that I just said 'Tetelestai' on their asses.  (A long heavy sigh)  That said.  I won't blame you for being this way.  I wouldn't blame you at all if you never wish to be a guardian again.  I wouldn't blame you at all if you're so fsking pissed at me that you'll blaspheme my face til the end of time.  I can only ask you not to.  I'm not the one who took everything from you. I only wanted you to wait one more year.  You were an honorable, upstanding and righteous kid, I couldn't think of any better guardian material.  And you probably still would be if your parents didn't flat out discarded you.  I ask you, Nigel.  I won't blame you if you give up being a guardian.  Hate your parents if you must.  Blow off your angst at a cruel and uncaring world all you want.  I beseech you.  Don't pin the blame of what happened to you on me.  I won't blame you if you hate me all my life, just don't blame me for what happened.  It is your father who sinned against you, not I.  He's the one you should be throwing that rock at."

One more sigh.  "All right now.  I've said my peace.  You can cast your stone now."

I wonder what Nigel would say or do if he heard that.
