I'm guessing the marker bleeds through the page so you can only use one side (I'm asking because I like how brightly the colors pop. Might be a better choice than color pencils when I want to add color to my art)

Impressive bit of cartooning either way :)

Oh yes, definitely you can only use one side of the paper when you use markers. In general I always recommend to use one side in any drawing.
And yes, it is very pretty how colors pop with color markers, I recommend you to try them, or even to combine them with color pencils

I assume markers are a tad more expensive than color pencils. How many colors do you think is good to have available for art? Or do you buy your markers individually as needed instead of # sets?

I bought a box of Prismacolor with 72 colors, and then each time I consider I need another color, I buy them individually. But it is good to start with a box.
Prismacolor is a very inexpensive brand for color markers, and it is really good. I tried before with Touch Five and I can't recommend that brand at all. Copics are very expensive, and I think the result comparing with Prismacolor are very similar.
