This is an easter bunny character I came up with about 11 years ago.

I think of easter bunnies as a separate species from rabbits. They look like rabbits, of course, but they have extra magical abilities owing to the fact that they are easter bunnies.

Anyway, I've always been a huge fan of the easter holiday, and it is probably my favorite holiday of all, perhaps even slightly more than christmas, though it's a close second for sure. Both holidays focus on candies, colors, and gifts. So "easter" is sort of like the spring version of christmas! While christmas is cozy, easter is full of vibrant color, vitality, and gaiety. As such it seems natural to associate the holiday with gayness, which is another reason why I personally love it.

I thought it would be really cool if there was a game that capitalized on the easter theme, gaudy colors and all. I was trying to devise an Easter Bunny video game mascot like those 90s furry themed characters that were so popular in the 16bit era. The name "Vern" is shortened from "Vernal Equinox" which is the official start of spring. I could definitely see a spunky easter bunny character like Vern being a genesis type video game character back in the day.

I imagine Vern can somehow materialize easter eggs and use them as weapons (leave it to your imagination where they come from). He might have other abilities but frankly I didn't give the game mechanics much thought. This was more the character designing and concept phase. I wanted to design Vern to use as many colors as possible and have the colors be easter themed. Another important concept was that Vern was meant to be a queer character. How explicit this was going to be I was undecided, but at very least I wanted him to be queer coded, if not explicitly gay.

So what would the game have been about? Well Vern is the guardian of the Easter Holiday (think like Jack Skeleton being the guardian of halloween). Unfortunately somebody doesn't like easter (it's too gay of a holiday!) and so they've stolen the holiday egg (or some similar macguffin) that keeps the easter spirit alive, and possibly have also kipnapped Vern's boyfriend (if I decided to make it that explicitly gay). Vern has to travel through different holiday realms, fighting off the other holiday guardians to figure out which holiday is responsible for trying to destroy easter. Each stage/level would have featured a different holiday themed environment/boss. The exact set of holidays was somewhat uncertain, but there is no doubt that it would have to include christmas and halloween. Beyond that there is an assortment of holiday options: thanksgiving, valentines, and 4th of july, to name the most choice possibilities. Who is responsible? Not entirely sure, I never fully developed the concept. However in (2) you can see some of the other holiday guardians/bosses. In addition to Vern, we have "Hellbent the Hallow" as the guardian of halloween, "Sammy The CrackerPack" as the guardian of Independence Day, and "Rudolph the Frost" as the guardian of christmas. At least 7 stages appear to have been planned based on a stage list in the upper left. The seven stages would be:

(1) Easter Stage (2) Independence Day Stage (3) Halloween Stage (4) Thanksgiving Stage (5) Christmas Stage (6) New Years Stage (7) Valentines Stage

Not necessarily in that order, although the Easter Stage would be first as it starts in Vern's home before he sets out to the other stages.

I think this would make a fun concept for a 2d platformer, which was the original plan. This is actually the second easter-themed video game idea I came up with. Long before Vern I had a concept for a very weird game featuring an easter theme and easter bunny main character, but there is was meant to be more off the wall and comedic like earthworm jim. Vern is a little more fleshed out. Anyway, that's how this picture came about. I never got beyond concept art.
